The Chinook Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) hosted a pancake feed this past Sunday, October 16, 2016. This annual community appreciation event has been going on for nearly 10 years. They cooked pancakes, eggs, and sausage for over 150 local residents. The lunch was provided for free but donations were gladly accepted. The granddaughter of CVFD's crew chief, Jim Doyle, declared that "The eggs were the bomb!"

Donations this year will be used to maintain as well as update their fire equipment. Greg Mosness of the CVFD said that they will be addressing their crash equipment first this year and then will use donations to address other equipment. As a volunteer fire department in a less populated area, the CVFD relies considerably on community donations.

Greg also advised us that they are potentially preparing for a more severe fire season next year. Due to the excessive rain this year, there is a surplus of forage that could turn into prime fire fuel if it ends up being a drier spring and summer. This is just another reason they need to make sure they are primed and ready for any adverse situations that may arise.

This year, First Bank of Montana and Bear Paw Credit Union donated money to provide giveaway items for the community. This included helmets, stickers, and other fire prevention related items to help get kids involved and thinking about fire safety. The Montana Chiefs Association also provided smoke alarms to fire stations across the state to give to community members. Remember, when the time changes each year, change the battery in your smoke alarm and don't forget to check that battery monthly to make sure you are prepared in case of a fire.
