Local athletes shine at North/East Top 10, District 9C, 2B meets on tap this week

Chinook sophomore Megan Molyneaux gets a good start out of the blocks during the 100 meter Dash at the Top 10 Meet in Glasgow. Molyneaux finished second in the race while also winning the 200 Meter Dash.

The District 9C and District 2B Track and Field schedule concluded its regular season this past week and now athletes will turn their attention to the post season.

The District 9C will gather in Havre today, Wednesday May 10, and the District 2B will meet in Wolf Point with athletes competing for a spot at the Divisional level next week.

The North East Top 10 was held in Glasgow last Tuesday and featured the top ten qualifiers from the region in each event. The Top 10 Includes athletes from the Class A, Class B and Class C ranks giving competitors a great atmosphere to compete in as they prepare for the District, Divisional and State Tournaments.

Teams also competed in the Jason Groseclose Memorial in Rudyard on Monday and the Gene Nelson Memorial in Wolf Point on Saturday.

Several area athletes have already qualified for the state B and C Track and Field Meets including Chinook sophomore Megan Molyneaux in both the 100 and 200 Meter sprints, Harlem senior Reece Hutton in the Shot Put and the Discus and Tyus Hammett in the High Jump.

At the Top 10 the Chinook girls 4x100 Meter relay team also qualified for the State C as they completed the four hand offs around the track in :52.38 to secure their spot at state. The relay team included Molyneaux, senior Rochelle Chaffin, junior Jaye Anderson and sophomore Kourtney Hanson. The quartet finished fourth in the event.

Molyneaux claimed the 200 Meter title, breaking the tape in :27.26. She also earned a runner up finish in the 100 Meter Dash.

Sophomore Kourtney Hanson has proven herself to be a contender in the middle distance races qualifying for the top 10 in both the 800 Meter and 1,600 Meter races. Hanson ran the 800 Meter Run in Glasgow earning a third place podium finish with a time of 2:30.06.

Senior Brooke Elliot had a superb day in the field for the Sugarbeeters earning podium finishes in all three disciplines. Elliot finished second in the Discus with a flip of 108'10", third in the Shot Put with a heave of 35'7" and fourth in the Javelin with a mark of 108'4".

Chaffin scored a fifth place finish in the 300 Meter Hurdles crossing the finish line in :49.36. Freshman Raynee Hassler also competed for the Sugarbeeters at the Top 10 finishing ninth in the 3,200 Meter Run.

Senior Kyler Johnson earned a second place finish in the 1,600 Meter race for the Sugarbeeter boys. Johnson also finished ninth in the 3,200 Meter Run. Sophomore Trajan Hannum rounded out the Sugarbeeter roster, finishing eigth in the 800 Meter run completing the two lap race in 2:11.93

Harlem Wildcat freshman L'Tia Lawrence made her mark during the Cross Country season last fall and has established herself this spring in the long distance races as well.

Lawrence completed eight laps around the track to win the 3,200 Meter Run with a time of 12:14.88. She also finished second in the 1,600 Meter Run with a time of 5:42.81.

Wildcat senior Reece Hutton, one of the premier throwers in all of Class B, had another strong showing at the Top 10. Hutton's effort of 51'5" in the Shot Put earned him a second place finish at the elite meet while his mark of 129'2" in the Discus was good for a fourth place finish.

Turner Junior Eddie Harmon competed in both the 100 Meter Dash and the 800 Meter Run at the Top 10 in Glasgow. Harmon has been amongst the best in the 800 Meter Run the past two seasons and finished second last Tuesday.

Freshman Taggert Devaney also earned a spot on the podium for the Wildcats finishing the 800 Meter run in 2:08.78 for a third place finish. Devaney also finished eighth in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Senior Damon Adams was seventh in the 200 Meter Sprint, senior Tyus Hammett was sixth in the High Jump and eighth in the 110 Meter Hurdles.

Junior Eddie Harmon has been one of the best Class C middle distance runners for the past two springs and competed very well in the 800 Meter Run in Glasgow finishing second with a time of 2:07.71. Harmon also competed in the 100 Meter Dash for the Tornadoes, finishing ninth. Sophomore Cody Welsh finished seventh in the 110 Meter Hurdles.

Senior Isiah RunsAbove was the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds lone representative at the Top 10 competing in the 1,600 Meter Run. RunsAbove completed the four laps in 4:54.93, good for a fourth place finish.

Turner freshman Sarah Billmayer won the Triple Jump, Long Jump, 100 Meter Dash, 100 Meter Hurdles and 300 Meter Hurdles in Rudyard while Chinook senior Wade Schneider won the Shot Put, Discus and Javelin at the Jason Groseclose Memorial last Monday.
