Sugarbeeters fall to Ft. Benton,bounce back to win Malta Tournament

The Chinook Sugarbeeters celebrate after winning the Malta Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The 'Beeters went 2-1 in Pool play and then topped Nashua and Tri-City in tournament play before defeating Malta 24-25, 25-16 in the championship. Chinook will host their own invitational this Friday and Saturday.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters capped their first weekend of action on the court with their fourth title in a row at the Malta Invitational. Friday the girls fell in four sets to the Fort Benton Longhorns at home.

In their opening match of the season it was the Longhorns that controlled the match early taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21.

The third set saw Chinook take charge early scoring the first seven points before a Longhorn timeout.

Fort Benton responded with another mini-run but it was Chinook who asserted themselves and finished with a thrilling 26-24 win.

The Sugarbeeter again led early but the fourth set would end up in Fort Benton's favor 25-23 to secure the match for the Longhorns.

Junior Kourtney Hanson led the 'Beeter attack with nine kills and two blocks.

Senior Sierra Swank set the hitters up with 13 assists. Senior Carrie Hofer dug up 14 balls as did Swank.

In Malta the eight team tournament included teams from Chinook, Harlem, Rocky Boy, Malta, North Country, Tri-Cities, Poplar and Nashua.

The Sugarbeeters went 2-1 in Pool play and earned the number one seed based on points as they headed to bracket tournament play.

Chinook first defeated the Nashua Porcupines in a quarterfinal contest and then took down Tri-Cities in the semifinal match to advance to the championship.

In the finale the M-ettes squeaked out a 25-24 win but Chinook's 25-16 set two victory gave Chinook the championship.

The 'Beeters head to Box elder Thursday before hosting their annual invitational tournament Friday and Saturday.
