'Beeters fall to North Star win two at Fort Benton Tournament

The Chinook Sugarbeeter volleyball team had a mixed week on the court as they had their fair share of ups and downs.

Thursday the girls welcomed the North Star Knights to town in homecoming match that featured the top two teams in the District 6C-East.

Saturday the team was in Fort Benton for the Longhorns annual mid-season tournament where they went 2-1 in pool play before bowing out of the tournament with setback against those same pesky Knights.

In the Homecoming match against North Star the 'Beeters came out firing on all cylinders and had the student section in a frenzy from the get go.

Chinook scored early and often in the opening set pulling away for a 25-15 set win. Junior Kourtney Hanson sent home five kills in the opener and senior Carrie Hofer dug up six balls.

That was it for the win column as the Knights rebounded to win the second set 28-26, the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-16 to win the match 3-1.

Hanson led the offensive attack with 15 kills, Hofer collected 16 digs and senior Sierra Swank recorded 15 assists.

The loss drops the 'Beeters back to 4-2 in District 6C-East play and 4-4 overall.

The sugarbeeters still look to hold onto the number two seed entering the district tournament where anything can and often does happen.

In Fort Benton the 'Beeters began pool play with 25-16, 25-20 (2-0) win over the Augusta Elks. Hanson recorded eight kills in the opener and Swank set the hitters up with 12 assists.

In match two the 'Beeters topped the Cascade Badgers 25-25, 25-16 (2-0). Hanson and Swank each tallied three kills in the match. Swank also recorded four assists and junior Lincy Johnson with eight digs in the win.

Match three found the 'Beeters in a tight match with the Great Falls Central Mustangs of the District 7C.

The Mustangs were the victors in a split match by scoring the most cumulative points. Chinook won set 26-24 but the Mustangs held a 21-16 lead when time ran out in set to for a collective score of 45-42.

Hanson had three kills in the match while Swank and Molyneaux each had two. Molyneaux also dug up 17 balls in the contest.

In the first round of the single elimination tournament the 'Beeters faced the North Star Knights.

Chinook fell in the first set 25-15 and dropped the second 25-22 to end their tournament.

Hanson collected four kills against the Knights while Molyneaux and senior Erin Pula each had three. Swank totaled 11 assists ans served up three aces.

Chinook will host the Big Sandy Pioneers Thursday before heading back out on the road to face Fort Benton on Saturday, October 7 and Malta, Tuesday, October 10.
