December 6, 2017

Today the library has special hours from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. This is to allow set up time for the 5th Annual Friends of the Harlem Library Wine and Cheese Holiday fundraiser tonight from 6-8 P.M. Call the library to see if there are any tickets still available.

Tis the season to be reading! We have a wonderful selection of holiday books on the Christmas book tree for you to choose from!

New titles include “Manhattan Beach” by Jennifer Egan. When Anna Kerrigan was twelve she goes with her father to visit Dexter Styles, who is somehow vital to the survival of her family. Years later, Anna’s father has disappeared and the nation is at war. She works at Brooklyn Naval Yard and becomes the first female diver, repairing ships that will help America win the war. One evening at a nightclub, Anna once again meets Styles and learns the complexities of her father’s life and the reasons for his disappearance.

A new biography is “Grant” by Ron Chernow, who is the Pulitzer prize-winning author of “Washington” and “Alexander Hamilton.”

“The Lying Game” is written by Ruth Ware. Fatima, Thea, Isa and Kate were best friends at a second-rate boarding school near the English Channel. Notorious for playing the Lying Game, years later they learn the game has consequences and they realize their shared past is not as safely buried as they thought.

John Grisham fans will want to pick up his latest “The Rooster Bar.” Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school with intentions to change the world. But they have now discovered they are part of The Great Law School Scam. Borrowing to attend what they learn is a third-tier, for-profit law school they are deep in debt to a shady New York hedge-fund operator. Is there a way out?

“A Stranger in the House” is by author Shari Lapena. You are home making dinner for your husband when you get the dreaded phone call. You race to a dark, deserted building and brace for the worst. After that you remember nothing. You tell your husband you were in an accident. The police have suspicions. Your best friend is not sure of the truth and even you don’t know what to believe.

Other new selections include “Book of Judas” by Linda Stasi, “All She Left Behind” by Jane Kirkpatrick, and “Stay with Me” by Ayobami Adebayo.

The on-going used book sale can be found in the Reading Room. This replaces the annual used book sale held in December.
