Teresa Cornell, 2017 Reading Challenge winner, with her prize gift basket

The free class "Microsoft Word: The Basics" will be held tonight, Jan. 17, 7 P.M. at the library. Hope Speakthunder and Heidi Harris will be instructing. Please bring your own laptop if you have one. The library has 5 computers available with Microsoft Word installed. Contact the library if you plan to attend.

The library will host the special presentation "A Visit with Teddy Roosevelt" Wed., Jan. 24, 7 P.M. in the meeting room. Archer Ellwein from Humanities Montana will give his impersonation of the 26th president including his views on conservation, agriculture, and democracy. Following his "press conference" Ellwein will come out of character for further discussion. Refreshments will be served. This event is co-sponsored by the Little Rockies Senior Center and the Harlem Public Library.

Congratulations to Teresa Cornell for winning the 2017 Reading Challenge prize! The challenge was to read at least 52 books in 2017. Those who met or surpassed the goal were Teresa, 58; Vicki Snider, 60; Shannon VanVoast 67; Hannah and Izzy VanVoast (their mom said 5200 each!!); Jack Young, 60; Dorothy Harris, 63; Carly Vauthier, 55; and Colleen Brommer, 65. Thanks to everyone who participated! We hope many more people will choose to read at least 52 books in 2018. You may win a fabulous gift basket including a $25 gift card.

The Book Challenge gives you a chance to win a monthly $10 gift certificate from a local business. Each month we give you a certain type of book to read. When you finish your book contact the library and your name will go into the drawing. The book for January is an award winning book. Call us and we can help you find one.

The Book Club will hold their first discussion of the book "The Children Act" by Ian McEwan Jan. 22, 4 P.M.

The library board of trustees will meet for their monthly meeting Jan. 24, 4:15 P.M. in the library meeting room.

Those of you who enjoyed "The Martian" by Andy Weir will want to read "Artemis." Jasmine Bahara lives in the lunar colony of Artemis and her goal is to get rich. Rich enough to move out of her coffin-sized apartment, to eat something rather than flavored algae, and to pay off a long-overdue debt. When she has a chance to meet her goal it requires her to devise the perfect crime that lands her in a conspiracy for the control of Artemis itself.

"The Ballad of Black Bart" is by Spur Award-winning author Loren D. Estleman. Between 1875 and 1883 a single outlaw known as Black Bart robs the Wells, Fargo stagecoaches a record twenty-eight times. Detective James B. Hume makes it his personal and professional goal to apprehend the thief. Set against the backdrop of the Old West is the story of a duel of wits between two clever adversaries.

New books to improve your health include "Diet for the Mind" by Dr. Martha Clare Morris. This work shares the latest science on what to eat to prevent Alzheimer's and cognitive decline. The second is "How Not to Die Cookbook" by Michael Greger, M.D. which provides 100+ recipes to help prevent and reverse disease.

The first installation in a new science fiction series "The Great God's War" is "Seventh Decimate" by Stephen R. Donaldson. Tom Clancy's latest Jack Ryan novel is "Power and Empire" by Marc Cameron. "The Ladies of Ivy Cottage" by Julie Klassen is book two in the "Tales from Ivy Hill" series.
