'Beeters, Wildcats will lay it all on the line this weekend in Malta at the Northern B/C Divisional

Chinook freshman Garrett Pruttis controls his opponent in a match earlier this season. Pruttis and his teammates will join the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and the Harlem Wildcats at the Northern B/C Divisional in Malta this Saturday.

The time is now for high school wrestlers across the state and that means the Chinook Sugarbeeters, Harlem Wildcats and Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds will be working hard this week in preparation for the Northern B/C Divisional Wrestling Tournament in Malta this Saturday.

The teams got one last chance on the mat this past Saturday at the Malta Invitational and performed very well overall.

Chinook sophomore JT Hauer finished second in the 152 pound weight class going 2-1 Saturday.

He began the tournament with pin of Patrick Follett from Frazer in just :10. Hauer followed with a semifinal win over Marcus Woods of Malta in :40.

In the championship, Hauer held his own for much of the match but in the end fell by pinfall to Ceaton Mears (Malta/Whitewater) at the 5:04 mark.

Harlem senior Gavin Horn has consistently placed for the Wildcats all season and finished third at the Malta Invitational,

Horn pinned Hunter Velk of Havre in 1:20 to begin the day. In his semifinal match, Horn faced Tristen Kemp of Wolf Point. Kemp won by technical fall (15-0) sending Horn into the Consolation semifinal.

Horn bounced back to defeat Jay Nicholson (Malta/Whitewater) by pinfall in 1:12. In his third place match Horn again won by fall, this time pinning Havre's Dylan Young in 1:43.

Chinook junior Ross Reed also earned a third place finish on Saturday. Reed began the day with 4-2 decision over James Etsey of Cut Bank. In the semifinal Reed fell to Havre's Martin Wilkie by pin (:14).

Reed received a bye through the consolation semifinal and then won a rematch with Etsey 1-0 to finish third.

Sugarbeeter sophomore Reubin Swenson continued to perform well on the mat earning himself a third place finish as well.

Swenson opened with a major decision win (10-1) over Dylan Sullivan of Cut Bank. Swenson lost his semifinal match by pinfall at 5:42 to Cooper Larson from Glasgow.

Swenson rebounded to pin Danny Eder of Poplar in 4:24 and then pinned Luke Lawless (Malta/Whitewater) in 1:59.

The Sugarbeeters also received a fourth place effort from freshman Garrett Pruttis. After beginning the day with a pin of Travis Pew (Circle, 1:50). Pruttis fell to Keagan Thompson in a semifinal match and then defeated Xian Phillips of Havre by Major Decision (9-0) before falling in the third place match to Jacob Lone Bear from Poplar.

Former Chinook high school wrestling State Champions, Ben Stroh and Willie Miller along with several of the current Sugarbeeter varsity wrestlers held a camp recently to instruct the younger kids. The group had nearly 20 participants at its height but a winter storm had dwindled the attendees on picture day.
