Chinook Rod and Gun Club Annual Meet and Greet set for Friday, March 23rd

March 14, 2018

With warm weather on the way, hopefully, it's time to start thinking about enjoying the great outdoors a little more.

The Chinook Rod and Gun Club has become a great avenue for local outdoor enthusiast's to spend some time with family and friends, doing what they love to do. The Rod and Gun Club holds a Meet and Greet each spring to introduce the community to their ideas for the upcoming year and increase membership in the process.

The Meet and Greet will again be held at the Chinook Eagles Club and will feature a Taco Feed from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 23. This is a great opportunity for like minded individuals to hear about upcoming events and activities planned by the club.

What began six years ago with a small group of individuals looking to revive the once prominent club, has now grown to include more than 200 members, continuing to increase their presence in the community and surrounding areas.

First thing up will be a clean up day at the club's Gun Range south of Chinook on the Clear Creek Road. This comes just in time for the second season of Trap League at the range to get underway.

Doug McCracken and Chad Jones run the league and last year 11 teams took part in the fun. Teams consist of five members and compete every Thursday and Sunday. This years league is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, April 7th.

The Trap League is open to everyone, members and non-members alike. Each team is granted entry into the league via a sponsor fee and will compete for 10 weeks. There is not a sublist to compete so make sure you get your team put together in advance. At the end there will be a tournament day where prizes and awards will be given out.

Individuals are required to provide their own shotgun and ammunition, though McCracken did say their is limited equipment available from the club on a first come first serve basis.

Each shooter will also be required to pay a small fee for use of the range each day but is minimal by comparison to many other leisure activities.

There is no limit to the number of teams interested in competing in the league and McCracken is hoping to see the 11 team mark surpassed this spring. Anyone interested can contact Doug McCracken at 406-262-3616 or Chad Jones at 406-599-8429.

On May 4th, Elmer Zarn and the Rod and Gun Club will be taking fourth graders from Chinook, Harlem and Zurich out to South Faber Reservoir for a fun day of fishing.

Marc Klokker, Information and Education Director for MFWP Region 6 will be on hand as well as a couple of Game Wardens to help assist the kids with fish identification and catch and release practices.

Zarn said the club is in the process of working out a plan to take a class from the high school out to the range to help educate the students how to properly and safely handle firearms in a safe and controlled environment. Plans are still being finalized but they are hoping for the opportunity to happen prior to the end of the school year.

Throughout the summer their will be plenty of activities for members to take part in and of course in October the Club will be hosting its sixth annual Gun and Antique show.

With so much going on, being planned or being considered, anyone who has an interest should certainly stop by the Eagles and visit with members next Friday.
