Chinook Sugarbeeter Tennis is set to make another run at the Northern B/C Divisional

May 2, 2018

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have been a powerhouse in the State B/C tennis picture for many years and have been busy this season looking to add another trophy to case when the Northern B/C Divisional takes place May 14.

This years squad is mix of experienced seniors and new to the game freshman but loaded with plenty of desire. Seniors Sierra Swank, Megan Pruttis and Jamie Roth return a ton of talent and have all won on the big stage at the state tournament. Freshman this year are Jade Cecerle and Lily Surber and have caught on very fast and performing very well for the team.

The Sugarbeeters have played some quality opponents and this past weekend were in Townsend for the annual Dawg Bite Tournament. The ‘Beeters faced Whitehall, Big Fork and Simms/Granite in addition to familiar foes, Chester/Joplin-Inverness and Fairfield.

Head Coach Emily Harshman, like all the other coaches, has had to find a way to deal with the extended winter but likes where her team is at heading into the post season, “I’m pretty confident in my team moving towards the post season. My seniors (Jamie Roth, Megan Pruttis, and Sierra Swank) have been around this block before, so right now we’re just working on fine tuning their strategies in preparation for the post season. My freshman (Jade Cecerle and Lily Surber) have come a long way and have gained valuable experience this season by playing some tough matches so I think they’re feeling good going into next week’s tournament.”

This season has been anything but normal to start with, “Like all teams, the extended winter didn’t do us any favors. We practiced indoors a lot which dampens the kids’ spirit, but we were able to practice outside once the courts were cleared and the team spent some time shoveling what was left of the snow,” said Harshman.

Heading into the Northern B/C Divisional Harshman is confident in her seniors but in the new kids as well, “Our freshman have caught on to the game pretty quickly in spite of the weather and really focused on their form and footwork when we were stuck inside,” concluded Harshman.

The ‘Beeters will close out the regular season Friday in Chouteau and will then focus on the Northern B/C Divisional and advancing to the state tournament in Great Falls.
