May 9, 2018

The Chinook Sugarbeeters are on a roll when it comes to performing very well on the links. The team hosted their own invitational this past Saturday sweeping the team title in the process and crowning an Individual champion in the process.

The Sugarbeeter girls were led by the efforts of senior Carrie Hofer. Hofer shot a 46-47 93 and then won a chip off to win the individual tournament.

Junior Ashley MacLeod played very well recording a 47-53 100 to finish third. Sophomre Alyssa Gruszie added a 51-55 106 to the team score and finished sixth. Freshman Hailey Bell added a 62-59 121.

The girls three person team score of 299 was 27 shots better that runner up Belt. The 299 is also the second best team score for the Girls in school history, only to the 294 they shot the day before in Chouteau.

Macleod fired a 93 in Chouteau, Hofer added a score of 99 and Gruszie shot a 101 in helping the Sugarbeeter girls record team score of 294.

All four girls will represent the Sugarbeeters at the State C in Fairmont next week.

The Chinook boys also captured the top spot in the team scoring Saturday in Chinook.

Senior Tamer Jamieson led the Sugarbeeters with a 43-49 92. Jamieson won a chip off to clinch a third place finish.

Senior Jacob Huckabee was sixth at the Sugarbeeter Invite with a round of 51-44 95. Senior Brandon Paulson was one stroke back, going out in 49 and coming in with a 47 for a round of 96.

The team will look for a good showing next week at the State C and hope to bring home some more hardware in the process.

Since 2012 the Sugarbeeters have collected a team trophy and had at least one All-State golfer. In the previous five seasons it was the boys team collecting all the accolades, in 2017 it was the girls turn to shine as they took home a third place team trophy and Hofer earned All-State recognition with a sixth place finish.

Hofer, MacLeod and Huckabee have all been to the state tournament before. Hofer and MacLeod will be playing for the third time at the state meet and Huckabee went with the team as an alternate a season ago.

Jamieson and Paulson have been part of the Sugarbeeter tradition all four years of high school and after narrowly missing out last season they look to leave a mark this year.

Gruszie and Bell are new additions to the team and have really shined their first year of playing competitively.

At press time next week, the state meet be going on, so be sure to look for complete results of their tournament in the May 23 edition of the Blaine County Journal.
