his is the original chapel built for the St. Mary's Parish in Stevensville. The parish, still operating, started a few miles out of town in 1841 when Father Pierre DeSmet, S.J., came to start a mission in the Bitterroot Valley at the invitation of the Flathead and Nez Perce people. The original site, now a state archaeological site open to the public, eventually became Fort Owen and functioned as a trading post for many years. The new parish was started later.
