Bear Paw Meanderings

I love to stay in rustic cabins. Matter of fact I lived in several rustic cabins during my life and they were simply great!

What got me thinking about those cabins is that I got the dates that I am going to be staying at cabin 6 at the Village Lodge in Apgar. It is a cabin right on both Lake McDonald Creek and Lake McDonald and its picture windows frame the mountains that surround Lake McDonald. I will be staying there a few days this spring and a few more days in the fall.

When I stay at Lake McDonald Lodge I usually stay in cabin 14 which is another old and rustic cabin that is the last in a row of rental cabins that stretch from the lodge to the property line. I love that old cabin too but not as well as the cabin at Apgar.

My family has a tiny log cabin of our own in the cedar trees up the hill from Lake McDonald Lodge. It is more a shed than a cabin but it is simply grand in its setting. I love that tiny cabin too but I find at this time of life I need indoor plumbing.

A friend asked me the other day if I missed staying in a cabin on Beaver Creek or Clear Creek in the Bear Paw Mountains. I told him that I did not miss it one little bit because of my indoor plumbing needs.

However, that was not exactly true. When I think of my first cabin that was really mine on Clear Creek, then think about the A Frame on the Rocky Boy Reservation. Then think about the wonderful cabin up Alkali Springs and finally the last cabin I stayed at that was up the hill from Bear Paw Lake, I miss all of them.

I love the outdoors and love being able to look at grand views and vistas by looking out the windows of those cabins.

Cooking, eating and entertaining was much easier in the cabins and I do really miss all of them.

However, I live in a cozy house with a huge back yard filled with trees and gardens. The house has a large fireplace and I have all my collections of things in one place these days and so it seems like I am still living in a large cabin most of the time.

So, I am happy at home even though I do miss my rustic small cabins.

It will be great to get back to Apgar and cabin 6 next month!
