Turner Boys, Girls split games at Class C Showcase

The Turner Tornadoes kicked off the 2017-18 basketball season this past weekend at the class C Showcase in Glasgow.

Both the boys and the girls teams earned splits while in Glasgow with girls picking up a win over the Lustre Christian Lions 49-38 on Friday. Saturday the girls fell to North Country by a score of 50-37 to start the season 1-1.

The boys began play with a 97-78 loss against the Frazer Bearcubs. Saturday the team bounced back to edge the Lustre Christian Lions 68-63 to also begin the season 1-1.

The opening eight minutes of the game Friday produced some nice things for the Tornadoes but they still trailed 14-12. Freshman Shyan Krass score five points in the opening stanza to give the team a boost inside.

Turner tied the contest by intermission as the teams headed to the locker room knotted up at 20-20.


The Tornadoes took a slim 30-29 lead entering the final stanza. The girls controlled the final eight minutes of the contest outscoring the Lions 19-9 to seal a 49-38 win.

Krass led the team with 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Junior Raegan Conlan buried a long three point bomb and scored seven of her 11 points down the stretch to help the team secure the win.

Saturday the Turner girls held a 11-9 advantage after eight minutes on the strength of five points from junior Rylee Conlan.

North Country seized control in the second stanza outscoring the Tornadoes 18-5 to take a 26-16 halftime lead.

North Country extended the advantage in the third quarter to 40-25.

The Tornadoes kept fight and closed the gap by two down the stretch before falling 50-37.


Rylee Conlan paced the Tornado effort with 15 points in the contest. Krass added six points and junior Melanie Watkins chipped in five.

The girls will have this weekend off before resuming their schedule December 15 when they travel to Gildford to play the North Star Knights. Their first home contest will be Saturday, December 16 when they will welcome the Fort Benton Longhorns to town.

Offense wasn’t a problem for either team Friday afternoon when the Tornadoes and Bearcubs met in Glasgow.

The Bearcubs led by seven after eight minutes of action 27-20. Junior Cody Welsh knocked down 10 first quarter points to keep the tornadoes close.

The lead grew to 43-33 by halftime as the Tornado offense struggled to find its rhythm. Senior Eddie Harmon scored 12 of the teams 13 points in the quarter.

Frazer pushed the lead to 19 entering the fourth quarter 66-48. Turner scored a whopping 31 points in the final stanza with Welsh scoring 14 of those but the Bearcubs scored 29 in taking a 97-78 win.

Welsh finished the contest with 29 points, Harmon added 22 and freshman Austin Welsh 12.

Turner responded very well Saturday afternoon against the Lustre Christian Lions in securing their first victory of the season.

Harmon scored seven first quarter points and Cody Welsh and freshman Shane Kimmel each chipped in five as the Tornadoes held a 20-16 advantage entering the second quarter of action.
