Another hopeful sign of spring: the ice cream shop opened

April 18, 2018

Despite piles of snow in the parking lot and against the building, Chinook’s Creamery opened last week.

The Creamery is a seasonal ice cream shop that opens in the spring and closes when the weather turns cold in the fall. The day I stopped by to see how thing were going clerks Kylie Popchoke and Garrett Lowham shared a greeting with me: “It’s never too cold for ice cream.” Kylie even had a long-sleeved T with the phrase emblazoned across the front.

Kylie Popchoke is in her fifth season with the shop. She said, “I think we opened later in April last year. But, I never recall an opening as cold as this one.” “Regardless of the snow and unusually cold temperatures for this time of year,” Popchoke added, “business has been steady.” Sure enough, a family of five was enjoying their treats at the tables inside. More customers were steadily dropping by for a frozen treat. It seems a little sunshine and warmup gets the desire for ice cream going.
