2018 Blaine County Fair: fun for all ages

July 11, 2018

The midway at the Blaine County Fair lights up the evening sky as the sun starts to set. This years fair had a little something for everyone beginning with the Kids Rodeo on Wednesday afternoon and concluding with the Blaine County Showdown Demolition Derby Sunday night. Throw in the 4H - and FFA shows and exhibits, the Bear Paw Roundup Rodeo, some live music and a Livestock Auction and plenty of great memories were made.

The 2018 Blaine County Fair is history. As usual the weather was a big part of the fair, determining in large part the attendance at the fair and the success of the various outdoor events. Despite a record hot day on Friday, the weather was within norms and even a bit cooler than usual the first two days of the fair. And the weather was dry, always helpful during Fair Week.

Fair Board members and event staff said they had many good comments about the fair this year. Reacting to some negative response to setting fair dates during the Fourth of July holiday, one board member explained, "One more year on this schedule (during the Fourth) and then we go back to our regular fair schedule with a start date a week after the Fourth." The scheduling around the Fourth had to do with the rodeo stock provider and other rodeos they were contracted to serve.

Several new items seemed to resonate with guests. The golf carts were used extensively to move guests from parking areas to the grandstand and attractions. The new shade built with volunteer labor and donated materials was a big hit especially on those very hot afternoons. And reorganized parking seemed to accommodate more vehicles with less hassle. As usual, Dreamland Carnival provided a clean, efficient and welcoming midway. Many positive comments were shared regarding the River North band, newcomers to the fair lineup, that played after each evenings' featured events.

A power glitch during part of a morning was really the only detractor from a logistical standpoint. Exhibit areas and grounds were clean and well prepared for the fair. Changes in days or times for some regular events, like pig wrestling, the kids' rodeo and the demolition derby, didn't seem to negatively affect the number of participants or the level of enjoyment from spectators.

The "Journal" thanks the County Commissioners, Fair Board, Fair staff and many volunteers who funded, organized and presented another great fair. Thanks to all who made the fair happen and those who came to enjoy the festivities.
