Banned Books Week:

Sept. 23 - 29, 2018

Banning Books Silences Stories

This week we are centering on banned books. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Stop in and see our Banned Books display. Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Be a rebel, checkout a banned book and read it today!

Blaine County Library is proud to be Celebrating the Right to Read and as an extension of Banned Books Week we will be starting a book club titled Free People Reading Freely. Blaine County Library applied for, and received a grant from Big Sky Reads. Big Sky Reads grants are awarded by the Montana Center for the Book, a program of the Humanities Montana. Celebrating the Right to Read is a book club project that will be facilitated by Dr. Donna L. Miller, a trained discussion leader, former Chinook High School English teacher for 26 years, and a college professor with a PhD in English Education. We have purchased multiple copies of the Top Ten Most Challenged Books in 2017 as a starter kit for our book club. Of the 416 books challenged or banned in 2017, the list below enumerates the Top Ten Most Challenged Books in that calendar year:

1. Thirteen Reasons Why written by Jay Asher

2. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian written by Sherman Alexie

3. Drama written and illustrated by Raina Telgemeier

4. The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini

5. George written by Alex Gino

6. Sex is a Funny Word written by Cory Silverberg and illustrated by Fiona Smyth

7. To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee

8. The Hate U Give written by Angie Thomas

9. And Tango Makes Three written by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson and illustrated by Henry Cole

Plan to attend our inaugural meeting on Monday October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the library meeting room and learn about a different kind of book club!

We had a nice turn out for the book talk by author Barbara Lafrantz. Lafrantz talked about her book “A Ranch on People’s Creek.” She sold all the books she brought with her. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy of her book, the library can give you the contact information for Barbara. Thanks to everyone who came and joined the discussion.

The movie today will be “On Golden Pond” at 1:00 p.m. in the library meeting room. Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served. “Secretariat” will be the movie next Wednesday.

Story Time is Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Kids of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Middle School Hangout, for kids in grades 6-8 is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. LEGO Club is Thursday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and is open to kids in grades K-6. Younger kids are welcome to attend with an adult.

There is always something going on at the library. Check us out on Facebook or look us up on our website at http:www.blainecountylibrary.org for up to date information about what’s going on!
