January 30, 2019

Harlem freshman Taya Trottier runs the break against the Rocky Boy Morning Stars Tuesday night at home. The Wildcats defeated the Morning Stars 62-42 and the Cut Bank Wolves 72-54 to improve to 11-3 on the season.

The high school basketball season is quickly winding down and the post season is approaching fast. Teams are setting themselves up for the post season looking at playoff seeding with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.

The Harlem Wildcats moved to No. 4 in the Class B Power Polls after an impressive week on the hardwood.

On Tuesday the girls welcomed the Rocky Boy Morning Stars into their gym and walked away with a sound 62-42 win. Saturday the team headed to Cut Bank where they topped the Wolves 72-54 to improve to 11-3 overall.

The Turner Tornadoes began the week with a home contest against the Dodson Coyotes and were looking for the season sweep of their non-conference opponent. They did just that, winning a shootout 80-61.

Saturday they stayed at home to take on the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks as they stepped back into District 9C play. Turner took control from the get go and collected a 61-25 win to improve to 7-3 in District 9C play and 10-4 overall.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were in Gildford Thursday night to take on the North Star Knights. The Thunderbirds turned in a competitive effort but fell 54-42. Saturday they took control early against the Big Sandy Pioneers and rolled to a 71-31 win.

Harlem has been among the Northern B favorites all season long and Tuesday they showed why.

Senior L'Tia Lawrence and freshman Taya Trottier each knocked a long three down and combined for 15 of Harlem's 17 first quarter points to help the Wildcats take a 17-8 lead over the Morning Stars.

Lawrence added eight more in the second quarter as Harlem extended their advantage to 29-15 by intermission.

Senior Skylee Dirden provided the spark for the offense in the third quarter, scoring nine in the stanza. Trottier added five more, including another triple.

Harlem led 42-25 heading into the fourth quarter and cruised to a 62-42 win over the Morning Stars. Lawrence paced the offense with 20 points in the contest. Dirden added 17 and Trottier finished with 12. Harlem also got 10 points from sophomore Melonie Fetter.

Saturday in Cut Bank the Wildcats were looking to complete the season sweep of the Wolves. Dirden opened with a triple and scored seven first quarter points while Trottier added six to give Harlem a 18-14 lead early.

Lawrence knocked down a pair from behind the arc and scored 10 in the second quarter to help Harlem to a 36-27 halftime advantage.

Lawrence added nine more in the third quarter and ten in the fourth to power the Wildcats to a 72-54 non-conference win over the Wolves.

Lawrence finished with 33 points in the contest to lead the team. Trottier added 10 and Dirden nine.

The Turner Tornadoes have put together a fine season so far and Friday night were at home to take on the Dodson Coyotes in a non-conference clash.

Junior Sarah Billmayer connected twice from long range and scored 10 first quarter points to kick start the offense. Sophomore Shyan Krass score 11 in the first eight minutes and Turner opened up 27-11 lead early.

Both offenses would light up the scoreboard on this night. The Tornadoes added 19 more in the second while the Coyotes put up 15 to send the teams to intermission with Turner on top 46-26.

Billmayer added seven more in the third quarter while Krass and senior Raegan Conlan each chipped in four. Turner would slow their offense down the stretch to earn a 80-61 win over the Coyotes and complete the season sweep.

Krass finished with 25 for the Tornadoes, Billmayer added 23 with three triples and Raegan finished with nine.

Saturday Turner started slow, scoring just 10 first quarter points, but their defense was solid in giving up just two.

Sophomore Brooke Reed and Billmayer each connected from beyond the arc to help the Tornadoes take a 26 -9 halftime lead.

Krass owned the paint in the third quarter, scoring 10 as Turner began to widen their lead.

Up 47-15 with eight minutes remaining the Tornadoes were on cruise control, picking up a 61-25 conference win.

Billmayer again led the offense with 20 points, Krass added 13 and senior Melonie Watkins chipped in nine.

Thursday in Chester the Sugarbeeters got an offense put back from senior Kourtney Hanson to take early 5-3 over the Hawks. Sophomore Ginger Hauer extended it to 8-3 with a triple just seconds after checking into the game.

Sophomore Lily Surber added a long three of her own midway through the second for a 15-9 Sugarbeeter advantage. Senior Lincy Johnson knocked down a straight away three moments later and the finished the break with a bucket for a 25-18 Chinook lead.

In the end the Sugarbeeters would knock down six three-pointers in securing a 44-25 win over the Hawks. Hanson led the effort with 12 points. Johnson finished with seven.

The Thunderbirds started fast against the visiting Big Sandy Pioneers and never looked back. Nine players found the scoring column in the first quarter to help the Thunderbirds open up a 22-5 advantage after eight minutes of action.

Hays/Lodge Pole added 20 more in the second and were in complete control by halftime with a 42-13 lead.

The Thunderbirds didn't let up after the break, scoring 18 more in the third and 11 in the fourth to secure a lopsided 71-31 win over the Pioneers.

Freshman Tahtianna Whitecow-Morgan led the team with 13 points, sophomore Sierra Chandler added 10 as did senior Rayleigh Kirkaldie and junior Muleeah Stiffarm.
