Family Learning Night Has Record Attendance

March 27, 2019

Hadley Wicks and Teagan Britt, two starry-eyed kindergarten girls, emerge from their tour of the night sky. The Museum of the Rockies STARLAB® was set up in the school's gymnasium.

Principal Jon Martin reported that Family Learning Night, which was held at Meadowlark Elementary School earlier this month, saw around 100 children attend, the largest turn-out yet for this event in four years.

The theme for Family Learning Night was "Across the Universe." Parents accompanied their children on a journey through various stations and activities, collecting passport stamps as they made progress through ten different stations, including the STARLAB® from the Museum of the Rockies located in Bozeman, Montana. The STARLAB, which was set up in the school's gymnasium, provided an opportunity for students to experience the night sky at their school.

Falyn Cercle and Tayla Richman's astronaut did not survive the egg drop - as their "We Got Scrambled" notification testifies.

Other stations included Mars Landers, Space in a Bag, Mystery Science, Straw Rockets, Marshmallow Constellations, Reading Games, a Bookmark Make and Take, and a "Can You Fit through an Index Card" challenge.

At the sixth grade classroom's space station, Mrs. Janelle Deanon's class was learning about the astronauts' return to Earth and how their shuttles had to be designed to protect them and slow down their impact as they hit the surface. To simulate this process, the classroom station featured an egg drop where visitors had to design a shuttle that would get their "egg-stronaut" back to Earth without harm. Mrs. Deanon provided assorted materials that they could use to keep their egg safe as she dropped it from the height of the ceiling. Of those who participated, some "scrambled their eggs," but Mrs. Deanon reported a success rate of about 75%!
