Local School Supports World Down Syndrome Day

March 27, 2019

On March 21, Meadowlark Elementary School staff and students brought awareness to people with Down syndrome with a "Rock Your Socks" Day.

Down Syndrome International (DSI) selected the date for very clever reasons; the 21st day of the third month is a hat-tip to the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which leads to Down syndrome.

DSI coordinates the Twitter campaign, #lotsofsocks and encourages people all over the world to wear socks, t-shirts or brightly colored clothing to draw attention to 21 March and to raise awareness.

In support of the event, students and staff at Meadowlark wore brightly colored socks, long socks, printed socks, one sock, even three socks for three chromosomes.

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness initiative that has been backed by the United Nations since 2012. The purpose of the initiative is to raise awareness and support for those living with Down syndrome. It also highlights the facts of what it's like to have Down syndrome and how those with Down syndrome have, and continue to play, a vital role in our communities.

With their campaign, DSI not only raises awareness but consistently works to create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. Keeping that goal central to their work, they organize the WDSD Conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and a side event to the Human Rights Council at the UN in Geneva.
