There will be a Preschool visit to the Library Friday May 17th and the Meadowlark students will be visiting the library May 20th through the 23rd to learn about the Summer Reading Program. Our Summer Reading Program will officially kick off June 3, 2019. The theme for this year's Summer Reading Program is A Universe of Stories. Traditionally, summer reading programs are designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep reading during summer vacation. Preventing the "summer slide" is the main objective of summer reading programs. For many families with elementary-aged children, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs. The benefits of summer reading programming for children:

• Children are motivated to read.

• Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library.

• Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation.

• Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.

• Children have access to experiences through which they can learn to work cooperatively.

We have a lot of fun activities planned again this year. We will have a complete write up of programs and activities next week.

Free People Reading Freely book club will be taking a break during the summer months. We will start up again this fall, stay tuned for more information. Now that the weather is starting to warm up, visions of flowers and vegetable gardens are on our minds. To help guide you with your spring planting, the display table will have an assortment of gardening books for the month of May.

We have a couple of non-fiction books available this week. "Every Tool's a Hammer: Life is What You Make It" by Adam Savage is a chronicle of his life as a maker. It's an exploration of making and of his own productive obsessions, it's also a permission slip of sorts from Savage to you. Permission to grab hold of the things you're interested in, that fascinate you, and to dive deeper into them to see where they lead you. Savage is the star of Discovery Channel's Mythbusters and one of the most beloved figures in science and tech-he shares his golden rules of creativity, from finding inspiration to following through and successfully making your idea a reality. "Nanaville: Adventures in Grandparenting" by Anna Quidlen is a bighearted book of wisdom, wit, and insight, celebrating the love and joy of being a grandmother.

"Blessing in Disguise" by Danielle Steel, "Sunset Beach" by Mary Kay Andrews, "Big Kahuna" by Janet Evanovich, and "The Road Home" by Richard Paul Evans are new novels ready for checkout. We have three movies available this week: Replicas, Glass and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.
