The Summer Reading program “ A Universe of Stories” kicks off with Family Fun Night May 29, from 6:00 to 7:30. All children from preschool to junior high and their families are invited to attend for a time of stories, activities, and snacks. Registration for the summer reading program may be completed at the event. Each child must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver.

Registration for the Summer Reading program begins May 28 at the library, via email at harlemlib@live.com, or through our Facebook page. The library is also hosting a summer reading program for teens and adults. Call 353-2712 or stop by the library for more information.

A special thank you to all the individuals, businesses and organizations who donated funds or supplies for the Summer Reading program.

Your support has allowed the library to buy a great selection of new children’s book as well as materials and prizes for the Summer Reading program.


The Book Challenge for May is to read a book about music. The library will be closed May 27 in observance of Memorial Day. The regular meeting of the library board of trustees will be held Wed., May 29, 4:15 P.M.

Lisa See is the author of “The Island of Sea Women.” Readers are introduced to fierce female divers Mi-ja and Young-sook of the Korean island of Jeju. These two girls from diverse backgrounds work in their village’s all-female diving collective. Through the decades they develop the closest of bonds until forces out of their control push their relationship to a breaking point.

“The Last Act” is by Brad Parks. Out-of-work actor Tommy Jump is approached by the FBI to go undercover at a federal prison. The goal: to befriend a disgraced banker Mitchell Dupree and find the location of documents that can aid in bringing down a ruthless drug cartel.

But Tommy soon learns he has underestimated the enormity of his task and the terrifying reach of the cartel.

A new Medlar mystery from Jude Deveraux is “ A Justified Murder.” Once again Sara Medlar; her niece, Kate; and Jack Wyatt find themselves helping to solve the murder of Janet Beeson, one of the kindest residents of Lachlan, Florida. The sweet little old lady was shot, stabbed, and poisoned with no apparent motive. Sara, Kate, and Jack begin to see there are more secrets buried in quiet Lachlan than anyone knew.

Two new biographies are “First: Sandra Day O’Connor,” an intimate portrait of the first women Supreme Court justice, by Evan Thomas and “Wild Bill: The True Story of the American Frontier’s First Gunfighter” by Tom Clawn.

For you gardening enthusiast the library has a selection of gardening books on display.

Remember Lego Club for all ages meets on Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30. Preschool children must be accompanied by an adult.

The library has registration forms available for the upcoming Harlem High School All Class Reunion which will be held Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
