September 18, 2019

The Annual Sugarbeet Festival took place this past Saturday in downtown Chinook. The day began with the Jesse James Memorial Color Run and concluded with a street dance on Main Street.

This years festival was held in conjunction with the 7th Annual Chinook Rod & Gun Club Gun show, the Sweet Memorial Nursing Home 50th Anniversary and the Blaine County Cruisers Car Show. With so much going on the town was busy all weekend long.

The Jesse James Foundation did a wonderful job getting the day started off on the right foot with a positive energy and fun run. Anna Terry completed the course first, finishing just ahead of Tate Niederegger. Terry was the overall and teen winner while Niederegger was the adult winner.

There was also a Sugarbeeter contest with a number of entries being made in a variety of divisions. There were bouncy houses set up next to the Blaine County Museum that were occupied throughout the day by plenty of excited kids.

Street vendors were on hand selling a variety of goods up and down main street throughout the day and the First Bank of Montana held a Ping Pong Drop that provided fun for those who took part. Face Painting was a big hit with youngsters and adults alike getting some creative work done.

Later in the afternoon the Annual Sugarbeet Festival Parade was held as spectators lined the street to check out some creative floats, classic cars and even a few super hero's as they made their way down the parade route.

Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce President Daniel Dahl was pleased with how the day went, "We are happy with how everything turned out, we hope to keep growing each year. We want to keep it simple and increase our vendor numbers and look for ways to get local businesses more involved with activities to keep people in town."

Dahl went on to say, "We lost a few people with the football game being out of town for the street dance, but overall I think having the (Chinook Rod & Gun Club) Gun Show, the Sweet Home 50th Anniversary and the (Blaine County Cruisers) Car Show really benefited everyone. We would like to work together again next year."

Also featured during this years festival was a pie eating/throwing contests that seemed to be well received by everyone. The idea of getting people, especially local businesses involved in the festival seemed to really pay off and the Chamber looks to continue that trend moving forward.

The Blaine County Cruisers held their Annual Car Show down at the Blaine County Fairgrounds right next to the Chinook Rod & Gun Clubs 7th Annual Gun Show and both events seemed to help the other out greatly.

The Cruisers had a record number of entries into their car show with 62. Cars, Pick-ups, Hot Rods from as far away as Libby attended the show as well as folks from Malta, Turner, Glasgow, Harlem, Cleveland, Lloyd and Chinook.

There were a number of categories for people to enter their vehicles: Best MOPAR, Best Ford, Best GM, Best Pick-up, Best of the Rest, Peoples Choice and Best of Show.

Matt Langford of the Blaine County Cruisers was pleased with how the show came together, "It wasn't really planned to work with the Gun show or the Festival but we are very pleased with how everything turned out. I think we helped them out and they helped us out."

With so much going in town it's safe to say all of the events benefited from the folks brought into town for each event.
