Junior Delaney Kellam records a kill during the 'Beeters 25-13 first set win over the North Star Knights Friday night.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters welcomed the North Star Knights to town Friday night for a match featuring two of the heavy favorites to battle it out for the District 6C-East Crown.

The 'Beeters have had their way when it comes to volleyball in the District 6C-East and it seems that any path to a conference title inevitably has to come through Chinook.

North Star has been a solid program for years and anytime the two teams meet on the volleyball court it seems there is always something on the line.

It may be just the second conference match of the young season for both squads but with the history between the two, it lays a foundation for the weeks ahead.

Chinook powered their way to a first set win, taking control early and then cruising to a 25-13 opening set win. The 'Beeters slammed home nine kills and were relentless in their attack in storming out to the early lead in the match.

Set number two saw the Knights take an early lead and then had the two teams exchanging big swings until the 'Beeters seized control late and scored eight of the sets final ten points to win 25-18.

The 'Beeters again hit very well adding another nine kills to their team total.

Set number three had the 'Beeters looking to complete the sweep and send a early season message, but as with any championship contender the Knights were not going to just go away.

The third set was nearly identical to the second with the exception being the two teams switched spots. Chinook held an early advantage and it was North Star finishing strong to take the set 25-18 cutting the Chinook lead to 2-1.

The 'Beeters didn't swing well in that third set, collecting just five kills against five errors.

Set number four was a battle with Chinook looking to close the Knights out and North Star looking to force a fifth and deciding set.

In a back and forth affair that saw both teams have their opportunity to take control, it was the Knight that would prevail, evening the match with a 25-21 set win. The 'Beeter attack came alive with 11 kills but the Knights attack was strong as well sending the teams to a fifth set tie break.

Chinook would have the final say in a thrilling match between conference rivals, winning the final set 15-11 to earn the five set victory 3-2.

The 'Beeters recorded 38 kills in the five set win with junior Delaney Kellam leading the way with 11. Junior Jayden Miller added eight kills and junior Lily Surber added seven in the win.

Junior Ginger Hauer set up the hitters with 31 of the teams 35 assists. Senior Kendra McMaster and Miller each served three aces in the contest.

The 'Beeters welcomed the District 2B Malta M-ettes to town on Tuesday and results will be in next weeks edition. Chinook will head to Box Elder on Thursday and play at Hays/Lodge Pole on Saturday.

Chinook will host Chester/Joplin-Inverness on Thursday, September 26 in their Homecoming contest.

The Harlem Lady Cat volleyball team continued their hot start to the season last Tuesday as they defeated the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 3-0 in a non-conference clash.

Harlem took control of the match early, winning the opening set 25-15 and then cruised to a 25-8 second set win. The Lady Cats closed out the Thunderbirds in the third set with a 25-13 win to earn the sweep 3-0.

Thursday evening the Lady Cats welcomed the District 1B Rocky Boy Morning Stars to town. The girls turned in another solid effort as they took control of the match early and never looked back.

Harlem raced out to an early lead in the first set, never letting the Morning Stars get footing, winning the opening set 25-7.

The Lady Cats kept the offense rolling in the second set, tripping up the visitors 25-16. The third and final set was another methodical win for the Lady Cats as they swept the match with a 25-16 third set win.

Senior Sarah Billmayer and junior Shyan Krass each tallied three kills in the sweep while senior Taeshon Schaeffer served up the hitters with 12 assists.

Saturday the Harlem spikers welcomed the Glasgow Scotties to town for an important District 2B match.

Harlem has steadily built their program over the past four seasons but the Scotties have established themselves as a power in the District 2B through the years.

Saturday the Scotties started fast and never looked back taking the opening set 25-8. Harlem didn't hang their heads and continued to give their all but the visitors would take sets number two and three by identical 25-15 scores to sweep the Lady Cats 3-0 in the District 2B clash.

Next up for the Harlem volleyball teams are a pair of home contests this Thursday against the Malta M-ettes and Tuesday against North Country. The Lady Cats will then hit the road for a match in Rocky Boy on Thursday, September 26.

Junior Setter Ginger Hauer sets one of her 31 assists during the opening set of Chinook's 3-2 win over the Knights.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds will return to the court this Saturday when the host the Chinook Sugarbeeters and will then head to Big Sandy on Friday, September 27 for a match with the Pioneers.
