January 15, 2020

Harlem sophomore Taya Trottier continued her solid play on both ends of the court this past weekend as she scored 28 points to help the Lady Cats add two more wins to their season total and improve to 8-0.

The Harlem Lady Cats continued their winning ways this past weekend as the No. 3 team in the Montana Class B girls power poll improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season.

The Lady Cats began the week on Thursday with a 69-15 win over the Sugarbeeters in Chinook and the concluded it with a 60-43 conference win over the Glasgow Scotties at home Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile the Turner Tornadoes have been playing very well as well and improved to 6-2 on the season after earning a pair of impressive conference wins over the weekend. Friday the girls were in Hays where they turned in a solid second half to secure a 73-52 win over the Thunderbirds. Saturday the Tornadoes hosted the Chinook Sugarbeeters and coasted to a 63-19 win.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds hit the road Saturday afternoon for a District 9C contest. Taking on the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks the Thunderbirds turned a quick start into a lopsided 74-44 win to improve to 5-3 on the season.

The Harlem Lady Cats have been difficult for any team to stop all season long. With their ability to get out and run and play tough press defense it's a challenge opponents haven't had much success with.

Head Coach Marlin Lawrence has done a fantastic job keeping his girls functioning at a high team level.

Thursday night in Chinook Lawrence shook up his rotation and gave some of the younger kids an opportunity to shine early on. With that being said, all of his normal starters remained heavily involved in the game plan.

Juniors Gabi Bell, Alaynee Hawley and sophomore Chloe Messerly made their first starts of the season for the Lady Cats. Sophomore Taya Trottier still had a huge first quarter impact, coming off the bench to score eight points as the Lady Cats opened up a 22-4 lead.

Trottier added six more in the second and senior standout L'Tia Lawrence added 12, including a pair from long range. Senior Kailey Henry added a triple of her own and the Lady Cats took a 47-9 lead into halftime.

Henry added six more in the third quarter and Lawrence and Trottier combine for ten points in the fourth the help Harlem notch a 69-15 non-conference win over the Sugarbeeters.

Lawrence led the Lady Cats with 20 points while Trottier scored 18 and Henry added 13. Junior Lily Surber score six to lead the Sugarbeeters.

Friday, the Lady Cats returned to the friendly confines of their home gym to welcome the Glasgow Scotties to town in a District 2B clash. The Lady Cats were prepared to be tested as the Scotties brought a 5-1 record into the contest.

Looking to get off to a fast start the Lady Cats applied pressure early and attacked the basket from the opening tip but it was the range of senior sharpshooter Kailey Henry that powered the Lady Cats in the opening stanza. Henry knocked down four first quarter triples and senior Taeshon Schaeffer added one of her own to help Harlem open a 20-9 lead after eight minutes of action.

Henry drained her fifth three of the half and senior Aria Owen found her mark from distance as well guiding the Lady Cats to a 34-20 halftime advantage.

Harlem nearly doubled up the Scotties in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 13-7 to lead by twenty (47-27) entering the fourth quarter. Glasgow trimmed a few points off the lead but Harlem still secured a comfortable 60-43 win.

Henry finished with 19 in the contest. Lawrence added 17 and Trottier finished with 10.

The Turner Tornadoes were in Hays Friday night to take on the Thunderbirds in a big District 9C contest. Senior, Sarah Billmayer got the Tornadoes going early with nine first quarter points to help the visitors open up a 25-11 lead after eight minutes of action.

Hays/Lodge Pole didn't back down to the early scoring barrage and returned some offensive firepower of their own in the second quarter.

Senior, Mulleeah Stiffarm knocked down a pair from distance and junior Sierra Chandler scored seven in the stanza. Junior, Ella Messerly added a three to help the Thunderbirds outscore the Tornadoes 22-13 in the second quarter and trim the Tornado lead to 38-33 at the halftime break.

Turner was able to re-establish themselves in the third quarter. Junior, Shyan Krass and sophomore, Laci Maloney each scored six to help Turner open up a 52-39 advantage entering the fourth.

With the momentum now firmly on their side the Tornadoes were able to control the action down the stretch and secure a 73-52 victory over the Thunderbirds.

Turner was led on the night by Billmayer's 26 and Krass with 21. The Thunderbirds were paced by Stiffarm and her 15 points.

Saturday the Tornadoes were back home and welcomed the Chinook Sugarbeeters to town. Turner came out the gate running and took a 25-7 lead into the second quarter.

The Tornadoes extended their lead to 39-15 by intermission on the strength of 15 first half points from Billmayer. The Tornadoes limited the 'Beeters to just four second half points in securing a 63-19 win. Billmayer finished with 18, Krass added 12 and freshman Dakota Krass contributed 11.

Saturday the Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were looking to get back on the winning track as they hit the road to take on the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks in another District 9C clash.

They wasted little time in establishing control of the contest. A strong first quarter effort led to a early 16-4 Thunderbird lead.

Freshman Nashone Shambo scored seven second quarter points, junior Ella Messerly added four and sophomore Jaedyn Chandler five to help Hays/Lodge Pole open up a big 40-19 halftime advantage.

The Thunderbirds would cruise the remainder of the way and lock down a 75-44 win over the Hawks. Sophomore Judemia Gray paced the offense with 17 points, Shambo added 14 and Stiffarm 11. The Thunderbirds improved to 5-3 with the win.
