No. 2 Harlem continues its march through the schedule, 10-0 at the midway point

January 22, 2020

The Harlem Lady Cats are undefeated on the season at 10-0 and are ranked No. 2 in the latest Class B Power Poll. They certainly have had some stellar individual performances on the season, but one thing they do best is play as a team. That team includes several individuals playing big rolls to make the 'team' work. Above: Senior Aria Owens is an integral part of the Lady cat attack, doing whatever is asked of her on both sides of the ball.

The Harlem Lady Cats continued their winning ways this past weekend as they improved to 10-0 as we cross the midway point of the regular season. In the latest Class B Girls Power Poll the Lady Cats moved to No.2 in the rankings, improving one spot from the previous week.

Harlem was in Box Elder Friday night where they earned a 57-38 non-conference win over the Bears. Saturday afternoon the girls were in Poplar where they coasted to a 74-24 District 2B win over the Indians to remain perfect on the season.

Friday night the Turner Tornadoes were in Big Sandy and left with a comfortable 68-30 win over the Pioneers. Saturday Turner returned home to take on the North Star Knights in a huge District 9C contest in the battle for second place in the conference. Turner fell in a tightly contested game 67-65. With the loss the Tornadoes record stands at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in District 9C play heading into the second half of the season.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds hosted the No.2 Roy/Winifred Outlaws Friday and found themselves down early in a 60-20 non-conference loss. The Thunderbirds bounced back Saturday, defeating the Box Elder Bears 47-36 to finish the first half of the season with a 6-4 overall record and a 4-3 conference mark.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have been tested this season but with just nine healthy players they continue to compete every time they step on the court. The 'Beeters suffered a pair of losses 71-21 to North Star in Gildford Friday night and 56-10 to Fort Benton at home Saturday to finish the first half of the season at 1-9 overall and 1-6 in District 9C play.

The Harlem Lady Cats began play this past week in Box Elder for a clash with District 9C Bears. With the exception of an early season outing against the Malta M-ettes the Lady Cats have pretty much had their way with their opponents all season long. Friday the home team was up for the challenge early on.

Box Elder matched the Lady Cats effort on both sides of the court in the opening eight minutes of action and led 13-12 heading into the second quarter. Harlem's defense would begin to flex its muscle before the half as they limited the Bears to just six second quarter points. Harlem put 13 on the board themselves and led 25-19 at the break.

In the third quarter the Lady Cats began to separate themselves a bit during stretches but the Bears always seemed to respond with an answer of their own.

Leading 36-30 entering the fourth quarter the Lady Cat offense woke up in a big way. Harlem scored 21 points the final eight minutes getting three-point buckets from senior Kristyn Kittson, junior Gabi Bell and senior L'Tia Lawrence in the process. The offense found its rhythm and the defense maintained its steady play leading Harlem to a 57-38 non-conference win over the Bears.

Senior Kailee Henry paced the Lady Cat attack with 18 markers while Lawrence and sophomore Taya Trottier each added 12 in the win.

Saturday the District 2B leading Lady Cats looked to gain a stranglehold on the top spot in the conference with a win on the road in Poplar.

Harlem started fast and never looked back. Henry dropped in a pair from beyond the arc in the opening frame to get the Lady Cats going. Lawrence added seven more first quarter points, not to be out done Trottier contributed seven to help Harlem take a 25-7 lead into the second quarter.

Trottier added six more before the half and Bell converted from distance to keep the Lady attack rolling. The Lady Cats closed out the first half strong and led 45-11 at the break.

Head Coach Marlin Lawrence slowed down his teams relentless attack to start the second half, giving back a point in the third quarter. Leading 55-22 heading into the final quarter the Lady Cats got everyone involved in the action and the team closed out the contest strong, securing a 74-24 win to improve to 10-0 on the season.

The No. 2 Lady Cats were led on the night by Trottier's 32 point effort, including 14 field goals. Lawrence added 17 for the Lady Cats in the win and Henry finished with 12

The Turner Tornadoes began the weekend in Big Sandy Friday night and wasted little time in taking control of the contest. Senior Sarah Billmayer ignited the Tornadoes fast start with 14 first quarter points to help Turner take a 24-8 lead early on.

Junior Shyan Krass scored nine for the Tornadoes in the second to give the home team a 42-11 halftime lead. From there the Tornadoes coasted to an easy win, 68-30. Billmayer finished with 29 points in the contest, including a pair from long range. Krass added 17 and Laci Maloney 9 for Turner in the win.

Saturday the Tornadoes were home to take on the North Star Knights in a battle for the No. 2 spot in the District 9C standings. Both teams entered the contest with just one loss a piece to the Fort Benton Longhorns.

The game was closely contested start to finish. The Knights secured a 18-15 lead after eight minutes and pushed the advantage to 37-29 by halftime. Billmayer would score nine third quarter points and sophomore Dakota Krass would knock down a triple to help Turner cut the deficit to one, 53-52 heading into the fourth quarter.

Down the stretch the Tornadoes had their opportunities to take the lead but in the end it was the Knights that took round one 67-65. Krass led the Tornado effort with 18 points. Billmayer added 17, Maloney 12 and Brook Reed 11 in the loss.

The Thunderbirds hosted the Box Elder Bears Saturday evening in the Thunderdome looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Roy/Winifred Outlaws (60-20) on Friday.

The Thunderbirds started strong taking a 12-3 lead into the second quarter and a 28-16 advantage into halftime. Hays/Lodge Pole maintained a comfortable 10-12 point advantage throughout the second half and secured a 47-36 win over the Bears. Senior Mulleeah Stiffarm led the effort with 14 points. Junior Ella Messerly added 14 more of her own and freshman Nashone Shambo added 11.
