Light your Front Door Blue to Show Support

A campaign that may seem new to the area has actually been going on in some way for several years. Folks travelling through residential neighborhoods in our communities may have noticed Blue Lights illuminated at the entrance to some homes. The Blue light is serving as a reminder to recognize and honor those individuals who dedicate their lives to public service as City Police Officers, Sheriff Department Deputies or in various other forms of Law Enforcement.

Similar forms of recognition are familiar to us like the ‘Green Light a Vet’ program or the ‘Yellow Ribbon Campaign. The Blue Light movement is just that. There isn’t a national organization or a sponsorship moving it along. It is a response growing individually to make it a point in this day and age to show support for Law Enforcement. The momentum it has generated is genuine and its message is becoming more and more powerful with each light that is flipped on.

The concept may have originated or certainly gained notoriety back in 2016 when the Green Bay Police Department distributed hundreds of blue lights to citizens of the community. The lights were donated to the Police Department from a local hardware store after incidents in Dallas and Baton Rouge left several Officers dead. Officers serving the Green Bay communities saw the lights as a way for the people they serve to protect to say thanks. Reports on the symbolic showing of support spread and eventually became what it is today.

Recently an anonymous donor delivered a number of blue lights to the Blaine County Journal ~ News Opinion to distribute to folks that would like to light their porch blue in support of all law enforcement. Blue lights can be found on the shelves of some local businesses along the hi-line and can be ordered from various sites on-line as well.
