TRISTAN BILLMAYER SUICIDE AWARENESS WALK

September 23, 2020

The Billmayer family takes a moment for a family picture prior to the walk. They are Shawna, Ella, Sarah, Trent, and Adam.

This year marked the sixth year since this walk was started. The walk was named after a local family lost their beloved son/brother/grandchild to suicide. The event was started to help raise awareness and educate people on the devastating subject. Although 2020 was rocked by a pandemic, the family of Tristan Billmayer felt that more than ever, they needed to raise awareness. So, they put together the event in a bit of a different format. They had Gerald Stiffarm of the Harlem/Belknap area speak to the group of about 75 prior to the walk. He gave an emotional message on suicide. At the close, he presented each of the Billmayer family a piece of sweetgrass.

Approximately 75 walkers participated in the sixth annual Tristan Billmayer Suicide Awareness walk this past September 5, 2020. It was a perfect day to walk. Temperatures were favorable and the Big Flat sky welcomed yet a beautiful day.

The walk was approximately six miles and the trek took a different route. It went south of Turner on a gravel road and met up with the 241 highway that led back into Turner. A sack lunch was available at the close of the walk. Special groups attending were the Cross Country team from MSU-Northern, some from Dodson, and Harlem. Several others represented their colleges.
