USS Montana Cookbook

October 21, 2020

The USS Montana (SSN 794) is the US Navy's newest nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine. This Virginia Class vessel will be commissioned for service in approximately one to two years.

The commissioning process is a big deal, a lesson I learned when the littoral combat ship, USS Billings, ?was commissioned in 2019 and I served on the commissioning committee. Funds must be raised, events must be planned, and a lasting relationship must be established between the ship's crew and the ship's namesake, in this case the State of Montana.

To those ends a group is putting together a cookbook of Montana recipes that will be given to crew members and dignitaries and sold to the public to raise funds for the submarine's commissioning. We would like to gather recipes from around the state, especially any that might be associated with figures from Montana history, historic places, or that have an authentic Montana flavor. (Think "moose stew with huckleberries," but be sure to suggest possible substitutes for hard-to-find ingredients!)

If you would like to participate in this project, please mail or email your favorite Montana recipe to:

Be sure to include as much information as you can about the origins of the recipe, why it is meaningful to you, or anything else that you think might be interesting to include in the cookbook.

Although we can't promise that every recipe will be included, your help on this project is very much appreciated. For more information on the USS Montana, the commissioning, and her crew ("Vigilantes of the Deep") visit the boat's page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SSN794/
