This trio of Chinook Sugarbeeter basketball players got creative in their desire to get some court time in. The three used a propane tank and torch to clear the court of snow and ice. They are L-R senior Ethan Bell, junior Toby Niederegger and sophomore Brenden Fetter.

The old English proverb 'Where there's a will, there's a way' was on full display recently at the Meadowlark playground basketball courts recently.

The day after the 'Beeter football season came to an end senior Ethan Bell, junior Toby Niederegger and sophomore Brenden Fetter were found on the black top clearing the court of snow and ice.

The Sugarbeeter trio had one goal in mind and that was to play basketball. To facilitate that happening the young 'ballers resorted to a propane tank and torch to get the job done.

"With Covid-19 shutting our gym down and not allowing us to use it and get better we've been using the outdoor courts a lot more than we have in the past," said Bell. "Now with the winter weather coming into play, snowing onto the courts, we needed to figure out a way to continue to get shots up. So Toby, Brenden, and I talked about some ways to do so at school and came up with the idea."

The group used a propane tank and torch borrowed from Brenden's Dad to get the job done, "While it was heating certain areas, we would be shoveling up snow and breaking up ice," added Bell.

The three had a sense of urgency about them, "Basketball season is right around the corner, but the grind never stops with us. We have big goals that go beyond the Divisional tournament this year. Even with Covid-19 playing a role, we're staying ready regardless," concluded Bell.

Niederegger shared in his teammates thoughts, "Yeah it was for sure great to get out and get some shots up in the cold with the snow playing a factor, we just didn't let it get to us. With football over and Covid-19 pushing the season back to December, this gives me more time to prepare for the season, since I just finished up my football season.

Fetter is the youngest of the group and is looking forward to playing a bigger roll on the team this winter, "It was a good day to get out and keep playing basketball, we haven't had a big snow day leading up to this point, and when we did we just had to adapt to it, when we were at school we talked throughout the day on how we could do this and came up with a good plan."
