Blaine County Vote Totals are a Complete 180 From the State Winners

It has been a little more than three weeks since Blaine County Voters cast their final ballots. By now we are all aware of the winners in each race, but how did Blaine Counties vote totals compare to the declared winners in the state vote.

Blaine County had the unique designation of being completely opposite of the state tally in every race ran statewide. Blaine County was in sync nationally in the Presidential race however. The following is a breakdown of the contested races and their results statewide compared to votes cast in Blaine County.

National - President, United States Senator, United States Representative.

In the Presidential Election Democratic challenger Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris defeated Republican President Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

In Montana 81.33% of registered voters cast their ballot with 343,602 (57%) going to Trump/Pence and 244,786 (41%) going to Biden/Harris. The remaining 3% of votes went to the Libertarian ticket of Jo Jorgensen and Jeremy ‘Spike’ Cohen.


Blaine County voters cast 1,589 (51%) for Biden/Harris 1,469 (47%) for Trump/Pence. In a breakdown by precinct voters in the Belknap 3-32, Harlem 9-32 and Hays 15-32 District voted overwhelmingly (86%) for Biden/Harris. Trump/Pence won by considerable amounts (83%) in the North Chinook 13-33, South Chinook 10-32 and Turner 1-33 Districts. Harlem 8-32 gave Biden/Harris 65% of the vote while Chinook 11-33 went to Trump/Pence with 67%.

In the race for United States Senator, Montana voters cast 333,174 votes (55%) for Republican Steve Daines while Democratic challenger and outgoing Governor Steve Bullock received 272,463 (45%) of the vote. Blaine County totals were 1,793 (57%) for Bullock and 1,343 (43%) for Daines.


Precinct totals followed a similar pattern to the presidential totals with half of the districts voting heavily, 90%, for Bullock and the remaining half giving about 80% of the vote to Daines.

In all subsequent contested races the Democrat candidate received the vast majority of the votes in both Harlem precincts as well as the Belknap and Hays precincts. The Republican candidate won the large majority in the three Chinook precincts as well as Turner.

The race for United States Representative went to Republican Matt Rosendale with 339,169 (56%). Democrat Kathleen Williams received 262,340 (44%) votes. Blaine County voters cast 1,707 (55%)votes for Williams and 1,391 (45%) votes for Rosendale.


The Montana Governor race went handily to the Republican ticket of Greg Gianforte/ Kristen Juras with 328,548 (54%) votes. The Democrat ticket of Mike Cooney/Casey Schreiner received 250,860 (42%) votes. Blaine County cast 1,619 (52%) votes to Cooney while Gianforte received 1,365 (44%) of the vote.

For Secretary of State, Republican Christi Jacobsen defeated Democrat Bryce Bennett with 60% of the vote. Blaine County supported Bennett with 53% of the vote.

Republic Austin Knudsen was elected Attorney General with 59% of the vote compared to Democrat Raph Graybill’s 41%. Blaine County supported Graybill with 54%.

State Auditor went to Republican Troy Downing with 55% of the vote. Blaine County supported Democrat Shane Morigeau, casting 52% of the vote for him.

Montana voters elected Republican Elsie Arntzen with 52% of the vote for State Superintendent of Public Instruction in what was the closest race in any statewide contest. Democrat Melissa Romano received 44% of votes cast. Blaine County supported Romano with 57% of ballots cast.

Blaine County voters elected Laurie McKinnon in a non-partisan race for Supreme Court Justice No. 5 with 62% of the vote. Voters also elected to retain Justice Jim Shea to the Montana Supreme Court.

Democrat Mike Fox was unopposed for Senate District 16 receiving 1,642 votes. Republican Mike Lane was unopposed in Senate District 17 and received 948 votes.

Blaine County voters cast 1,356 votes for Democrat Jonathan Windy Boy District 32 State Representative, defeating Republican G. Bruce Meyers.

Republican Casey Knudsen was unopposed in State Representative District 33 and received 927 votes. Democrat Tammy Sue Mitchell was unopposed for Blaine County District Court receiving 2,612 votes.

Democrat Delores Plummage received 99% of the vote for County Commissioner District 1 with 927 votes.

Constitutional Amendment C-47 passed 2,102-819. Constitutional Initiative CI-118 passed 1,838-1,237. Legislative Referendum No. 130 passed 1,677-1,361. Initiative No. 190 passed 1,987-1,125.
