6-0 Chinook Flying High After Lopsided Wins Over Box Elder, Chester/J-I & Turner

January 20, 2021

Harlem junior RJ Ramone had himself a game Thursday in Glasgow. Ramone knocked down 10 three point buckets and scored 39 points in the Wildcats 72-52 win over Glasgow.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up three more wins this week as they continue to roll through the competition. On Tuesday they steamrolled the Box Elder Bears 86-46, Friday at home they blasted the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks 73-22 and then took down the Tornadoes 80-30 in Turner. The Harlem Wildcats picked up a big District 2B win in Glasgow Thursday night, earning a 72-52 win over the Scotties.

The Turner Tornadoes fell in Fort Benton Friday night to the Longhorns 58-14. The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds continue to play hard but fell to Roy/Winifred Tuesday 79-39. Friday they hosted the North Star Knights and dropped another tough one, 70-57. Saturday the Thunderbirds were in Chester to take on the Hawks, but after holding a one point first half advantage they were out gunned down the stretch in 66-50 setback.

Tuesday in Box Elder the Sugarbeeters were looking to pick up another conference win. Senior Ethan Bell started the contest with a long three from the top of the arc and the Sugarbeeters were off and rolling in an important early season District 9C tilt. Senior Reese Elliot scored an easy basket at the rim off a nice inbound from Bell, and after junior Toby Niederegger added a triple of his own, the 'Beeters led 11-2.

The Bears found their mark from beyond the arc as Box Elder responded with three triples to cut the 'Beeter advantage to 20-15 from beyond the arc to bring the Bears within five at 20-15. Senior Damon Hannum connected from long range with :31 left in the first and Chinook took a 23-15 advantage into quarter number two.

Bell made a nice move in the key and dropped in a little floater for a 27-19 Chinook lead and added a baseline jumper on the ensuing possession to keep the 'Beeter offense in rhythm. Box Elder however continued to find their mark from distance, connecting again from beyond the arc to cut into the 'Beeter lead and closed out the half with the final four points to make the game interesting at the break with Chinook up just four at 33-29.

The 'Beeters came out strong in the second half and the defense tightened up on the perimeter leading to a huge effort by the 'Beeters in the second half. Junior Oskar Pula started the second half with an offensive rebound on the left block and followed with a pair from the charity stripe and senior Ethan MacLeod drew a charge on the defensive end as the 'Beeters began to build some momentum. Niederegger knifed his way through the Bear defense for a easy layup, leading to a Box Elder timeout with 5:12 on the third quarter clock and Chinook on top 40-31.

Bell then followed a Bear deuce with a triple and a swooping layup to push the lead to a dozen. Reese tipped in an errant shot at the rim to extend the advantage to 14 at the midway point of the third quarter, 47-33. Niederegger attacked the rim with authority, getting past two defenders for a layup to push the lead to 17 at the 2:23 mark of the third. Benton knocked down a three late in the quarter and the 'Beeters took a 14 point lead into the fourth quarter, 58-43.

Bell drained a back to back to back triples to start the fourth after Reese scored inside and the 'Beeters were in total control leading 72-46. Bell finished a pair of fast breaks, MacLeod turned an offensive rebound into points and Niederegger finished at the rim in a dominate final eight minutes for the 'Beeters as they turned a four point halftime advantage into a 40 point blowout 86-46. Bell knocked down six three point bombs and scored 29 points in the win. Reese Elliot tossed in 20 more for the 'Beeters and Niederegger finished with 12.

Friday in Chinook the 'Beeters were in complete control from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Bell continued his outstanding play, scoring 18 first half points to kick start the offense. Bell added 10 more in the third quarter for a game high 28 points in the win. Benton Elliot added 12 for the 'Beeter in their 73-22 win over the Hawks.

Saturday in Turner, the Sugarbeeters led 50-9 at halftime and coasted to an 80-30 win to remain unbeaten to start the season at 6-0. Bell scored 22 first half points and finished with 26 in the contest. Reese Elliot added 22 for the 'Beeters on the night. Chinook has outscored its opponents 82-40 in their first six contest.

The Harlem Wildcats were in Glasgow Thursday to take on the Scotties in a District 2B tilt. In a battle of two teams looking to contend for th District title it was pretty even early on. Junior RJ Ramone connected twice from long range and scored seven first quarter points to help the Wildcats take a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.

Ramone continued to find his mark, connecting twice more from downtown in the second. Junior Teagan LeValdo drained a long three of his own to help the Wildcats extend their lead to seven at the halftime break, 35-38.

As impressive as Ramone's first half was, his second was even better as Harlem slowly added to its lead. Ramone added a pair of triples in the third quarter and junior Daniel Lawrence connected from distance pushing the Wildcat lead to 52-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

Ramone finished the game just like he started, on fire. The junior added four more three's and 14 points to his effort in helping Harlem earn a 72-52 win over the Scotties. Ramone finished the contest with 10 three point bombs and 39 points. Junior Tyler Cichosz added 10 more and Lawrence finished with nine.

With the win the Wildcats remain unbeaten in conference play (2-0) and 3-1 overall. This weekend will be a big one for the Wildcats as they host the Malta Mustangs (2-0, 3-1) Friday with the winner putting themselves in the divers seat for the conference title.
