Spring Sports are Underway: Chinook, Harlem compete at Cut Bank Invitational Track & Field Meet

March 31, 2021

The Chinook Sugarbeeter Track & Field team may not have been at full strength this past weekend, but they still turned in some outstanding performances. From left to right: Chinook junior Kinley Hamilton got her season off to a stellar start winning the Shot Put with a heave of 33'5" to best the field by nearly six feet. Hamilton also won the Discus with a flip of 84'4".

The spring sports season is off and running, literally, as the Chinook and Harlem Track and Field teams were the first to compete. The Wildcats and Sugarbeeters were part of an 11 team field this past Saturday at the Cut Bank Invitational.

Saturday was the first allowable day of competition as set fourth by the Montana High School Association. With that being said, only 10 practice days were available to student athletes looking to compete. As expected both teams were a little shorthanded with many athletes not yet accruing the required number of practices.

When the teams boarded the bus Saturday morning to head west to Cut Bank the Sugarbeeters had eight boys and four girls set to compete while the Wildcat contingent included six boys and two girls. The 'Beeters and Wildcats may have competed with limited athletes but they all performed very well, especially for the first meet in two years, and in Cut Bank of all places.

Track and Field in Montana is always a little questionable with regards to weather in March, and Cut Bank has been known to have some of the toughest conditions in the state. As the teams made their way Saturday morning they encountered snow all the way to Shelby but as it would turn out, the day would have fantastic weather making it a very good day all around.

The 'Beeter boys would finish in a tie for fourth place with 59 points. The Wildcat boys accumulated 41 and finished eighth. On the girls side it was the Sugarbeeters finishing fifth with 39 points and the Lady Cats seventh with 27 points.

Considering that the athletes hadn't competed in a Track and Field meet in nearly two years, some rust was certainly to be expected and for the freshman class they were getting introduced to high school after just a seventh grade season to fall back on. For the runners, things happen pretty much the same, but for throwers there are some pretty big changes. The boys use a heavier shot and disc and both the girls and the boys throw an actual Javelin versus the Turbojav used in junior high.

Chinook junior Kinley Hamilton got her season started in remarkable fashion winning both the Shot Put and the Discus in Cut Bank. Hamilton dominated the field in the Shot Put with a heave of 33'5". That effort was 5'10.5" better than the runner up finisher in the 16 person flight. In the Discus Hamilton's flip of 84'4" was nearly 16' better than the second place finisher. Both of her efforts were personal bests.

Chinook sophomore Anna Terry took home top honors in the 3,200 meter run, completing the eight lap race in 13:31.3. Terry also finished second for the Sugarbeeters in the 1,600 Meter Run with a time of 6:12.42. Harlem freshman Kaitlyn Johnson turned in an outstanding effort in Cut Bank on Saturday as well. Johnson finished second in the 400 Meter Dash, crossing the finish line in 1:12.34. She was third in the 200 Meter Final with a time of :30.54 and fourth in the 100 Meter Hurdles (:20.03).

Chinook junior Toby Niederegger placed in three events on Saturday. Toby earned a third place finish in the High Jump, clearing 5'10", a third place finish in the 300 Meter Dash with a time of :25.01 and a fourth place finish the 100 Meter Dash, crossing the finish line in :12.11. Harlem's Zack Kinyon picked up a second place finish in the Discus (97'1") and a fourth place finish in the Javelin (117'2") to lead the Wildcat effort. Harlem senior Brent Cole finished second in the Shot Put with a solid toss of 36'2" and was third in the Discus as well with a flip of 95'7.5".

Chinook junior Hunter Molyneaux finished second in the Long Jump with a leap of 19' and was fourth in the High Jump (5'8") as well. Sophomore Braxton Inman finished sixth in the 400 Meter Dash (:58.17) for the 'Beeters and was third in the 300 Meters as well (:49.38). Junior Darrius Longknife earned a sixth place finish in the 300 Meter Hurdles for the Wildcats finishing the race in:50.53. Senior Andrew Rasmussen rounds out the scoring for Harlem with a sixth place finish in the 100 Meter Dash (:12.25).

The Chinook 4x100 Meter Relay team of Molyneaux, Tyler Schoen, Levi Jensen and Niederegger was second with a time of :48.12. The 'Beeters 4x400 Meter Relay of Damon Hannum, Jensen, Inman and Molyneaux was third with a time of 3:57.11.
