PAWS to Host Free Spay/Neuter Clinic in May

April 14, 2021

In partnership with Spay Montana, Pets Are Worth Saving, Incorporated, also known as PAWS of Chinook, is bringing a free spay/neuter clinic to town in May for low income households. Scheduled for May 8-9, the clinic will take place inside the Commercial Building at the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Chinook.

According to PAWS President, Alissa Hewitt, volunteers are needed for all facets of this clinic. Those interested in serving in a volunteer capacity should report to the Commercial Building on Friday, May 7 at 4:30 p.m. for an organizational meeting and debriefing session.

Anyone wishing to schedule an appointment for a spaying or neutering procedure should call the clinic line at (406) 357-7172. Although this service targets low income households, Hewitt encourages everyone to call. However, she cautions that there will be a waiting list. She also stated that using the clinic line will be the ONLY way to schedule a sterilization procedure.

Made possible in part by Spay Montana, this clinic will also offer low-cost vaccinations. Annual vaccinations and rabies shots are $10 each, or both can be obtained for $15. Appointments are not necessary for vaccination-only clients since vaccines will be performed in a drive-thru process. The vaccination clinic will operate from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on both days. Microchipping will also be available at a cost of $20 per pet. Dogs as well as cats are welcome at this event.

With a clever motto: "They can't add or subtract, but they sure can multiply," Spay Montana is a nonprofit corporation located in Helena, Montana. Their mission is "to continue to address the tragic consequences of companion animal overpopulation by focusing on high quality, large volume, no cost/low cost community-based spay neuter clinics."

Spay Montana's Executive Director, Sandy Newton explained that a portion of their funding comes from grants, with the remainder collected through corporate and private sponsorships and donations.

Likewise, PAWS of Chinook is dedicated to alleviating pet overpopulation in non-lethal ways. With a commitment to "providing a safe, loving place to land for pets looking for their forever home," PAWS is a dog shelter that offers placement for stray and surrendered dogs in addition to year-round financial assistance for those who cannot afford to get their pets spayed or neutered.

This is the first clinic to be hosted by PAWS of Chinook in partnership with Spay Montana, the entity that will perform spays and neuters free of charge on the second weekend of May.
