AANIIIH NAKODA COLLEGE 2021 COMMENCEMENT

May 12, 2021

Aaniiih Nakoda College announces the 38th commencement ceremony with twenty-two graduates. Former President, Dr. Carole Falcon-Chandler will be the honored 2021 commencement speaker. Dr. Falcon-Chandler retired this past September 2020 and had been the gentle driving catalyst for the past 28 years building Aaniiih Nakoda College (ANC) with academic excellence program by program and expanding the campus building by building. Through her efforts ANC gained national recognition for the outstanding academic programs, stable student retention, and affordable tuition that has not increased for the past twelve years. Dr. Falcon-Chandler came to ANC as the Dean of Student Affairs in 1992, and in 2001, she became the ANC President.

Dr. Falcon-Chandler's positive hands-on leadership built an administrative team who assisted her in the College's recovery from debt (2000) to an institution that has remained in excellent financial standing for nineteen years. She supported the development of the White Clay Immersion School (K-8) and housed the unprecedented school on campus, the first K-8 immersion program to be located on the tribal college campus. Her adopted philosophy of "grow your own" has seen the College develop and implement an Associate of Nursing Degree and ANC's first Bachelor of Science Degree, Aaniiih and Nakoda Ecology. With her support the Nakoda and Aaniiih cultures, histories, and languages were incorporated into all the academic, technical, and industrial programs. Across the globe, these unique tribal nations attributes are only found at Aaniiih Nakoda College. With the Board of Directors and her "grow your own" philosophy she has employed more than 40% of staff and faculty from FBC/ANC graduates and 75% of the fulltime faculty are American Indian.

With the support from the Fort Belknap Indian Community Council and the ANC Board of Directors, September 2011, Dr. Falcon-Chandler changed the official name from Fort Belknap College to Aaniiih Nakoda College to reflect the unique and original indigenous nations on Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.

The 2019-2020 academic year brought the Coronavirus COVID-19 to the local communities and she moved forward with positive determination leading the staff and students to complete the Spring 2020 semester totally through remote delivery; the first time in ANC history the campus was closed but still able to provide quality classes.

From May 1993, through May 2020, she has guided 755 graduates across the stage and on May 15, 2021, she will lead twenty-two more across the stage sharing their success. She is currently enjoying her retirement with her husband Al "Bakka" Chandler.
