Chinook, Harlem Netters Headed to State B/C in Missoula This Week

Chinook junior Allison Powell proudly displays the Northern B/C Divisional Singles bracket after winning the individual Championship. Powell won the championship match over Aaliyah Standiford (Chester/J-I) in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Harlem Wildcats joined the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hi-line Hawks in Havre this past weekend at the Northern B/C Divisional Tennis meet. The 'Beeters qualified five athletes for the State B/C Tennis Tournament in Missoula this week while the Wildcats will send three. The Sugarbeeters won the Northern B/C Divisional with 36 points. The Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hi-line Hawks were second with 31 points while the Harlem Wildcats were third with 13 points.

Chinook junior Allison Powell was impressive at the Northern B/C claiming the Singles title without dropping a set along the way. The 'Beeters also were well represented in the Doubles Tournament at the Northern B/C. The tandem of senior Jade Cecrle and junior Tylie Richman finished second while the tandem of sophomore Torin Cecrle and sophomore Lexi Pitkanen were third.

Harlem junior Alexus Cochran advanced to the State B/C in Missoula following her third place finish in the singles tournament. The Wildcats will be represented in the doubles competition as well in Missoula following the fourth place finish from the duo of sophomore Amelia Blackcrow and sophomore Grace Brockie.


Powell began her championship run with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Harlem freshman Alaura Hawley to advance to the next round of the tournament. Powell then took down Courtney Alley of Chester/J-I in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to move on to the semifinal round.

Looking to keep the momentum going Powell again took down her opponent in straight sets, this time defeating Chester/J-I sophomore Aaliyah Standiford 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the championship round. In the finale Powell again faced off against Standiford and again won the match in straight sets this time by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Powell will now head to Missoula as the Northern B/C No. 1 seed with her sights set squarely on the top prize.


Harlem junior Alexus Cochran will represent the Wildcats in Missoula at the State B/C Tournament. Cochran finished third at the Northern B/C Divisional to punch her ticket to the big dance. Cochran began her tournament with a tough match right out of the gate. Cochran took on Courtney Allen of Chester/J-I and battled to a split after two sets, winning the first 6-4 and dropping the second by the same 6-4 margin. In the third set Cochran fought hard but suffered a 6-3 set back to fall in the match 2-1.


Harlem senior Alaynee Hawley and freshman Alaura Hawley also competed in the singles division for the Wildcats. Alaura began the tournament with a win over Chinook freshman Tasha Skoyen, 6-4, 6-2. Hawley then faced the 'Beeters and Northern B/C No. 1 Seed Powell in her next match falling 6-0, 6-1. Alaynee started the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Chinook freshman Mya Berreth before falling to the Hawks Standiford.

Hawley bounced back in the first round of the consolation bracket by defeating her Harlem teammate, junior Mia Wing 6-1, 6-4. In round two of the Consolation bracket it was another match up between Harlem teammates with Cochran and Alaura Hawley facing off for the right to advance. Cochran won the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

The third round of the Consolation bracket again had two Wildcat teammates facing each other, this time it was Cochran and Alaynee Hawley. The two battled through an epic back and fourth three set thriller that needed extra points to decide a winner. In the end it was Cochran that earned a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory to advance.

Cochran then defeated Chester/J-I standout Courtney Allen and earned a 6-3, 6-4 win and guarantee her a spot at the State B/C in Missoula. Cochran then fell in straight sets to Standiford to finish third in the singles competition.

In the Doubles Tournament at the Northern B/C the 'Beeter tandem of Cecrle/Richman began with a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Harlem team of Blackcrow/Brockie. On the other side of the bracket it was the 'Beeters pair of Cecrle/Pitkanen beginning the day with a 6-1, 6-3 setback to the team from Chester/J-I.

The semifinal round featured Chinook's team of Jade Cecrle and Tylie Richman taking on the Chester/J-I team of Sydney Hawks and Molly Nelson in a battle of the top two seeds coming into the tournament. The 'Beeter duo proved victorious, earning a 7-5, 6-3 straight set win. The Hawks/Nelson team then defeated the Chinook pairing of Cecrle/Pitkanen in the third place match.

In the finals of the doubles tournament the top two seeds again found themselves squared off with one another. In the first match of the Championship round it was the Hawks/Nelson duo topping the 'Beeters Cecrle/Richman team to force a winner take all third match of the tournament between the two.

The 'Beeters Doubles team of senior Jade Cecrle and junior Tylie Richman finished second at the Northern B/C Divisional to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Unable to string together enough points and gain momentum in the match, the 'Beeters were defeated by the team from Chester/J-I. Richman and Cecrle played well and competed for every point but in the end they fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to finish second at the Northern B/C. All four teams will advance to the State B/C Doubles Tennis Tournament in Missoula this weekend.
