Harlem Library

June 2, 2021

The Harlem Public Library invites readers of all ages to join in our Tails & Tales summer reading program! Registration will begin this week and the entire program will run until August 6th.

We will kick off our summer with a stuffed animal adoption event. In collaboration with 21st Century and Aaniiih Nakoda College Library, children may come to the Harlem Library during operating hours during the month of June and choose a stuffed animal to adopt. When they choose their pet, they will set a goal to read so many books to their new friend throughout the summer. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian when registering.

We are encouraging the use of the app READsquared to keep track of books read, but participants may also keep track with simple tally marks or whatever works best for them. The main goal of summer reading is to get everyone excited about reading!

For children and families ages 0-Kindergarten, keep track of the number of books read and earn prizes after every 25 books read: The first 25 books will earn you a gift certificate for ice cream from Bliss Ice Cream; after 50 books read, you’ll get a gift certificate for an Italian soda from Schmuker’s Pizza; at 75 books read, you’ll receive a gift certificate for a personal pizza from EZ Mart; and after 100 books, you’ll earn a one day free swimming pass to the Harlem Swim pool. Children will also enter their names in a grand prize drawing after each 25 books read. We will provide a Storytime in the Park every Tuesday at 10:00 am, June 1st-July 20th, weather permitting. Bring a blanket and at least one parent/caregiver to the Harlem City Park. Keep a social distance of at least six feet from others and remain on your blanket throughout the entire storytime. Leave with a take & make craft, supplied by the library.

For students grades 1-8, the set-up is very similar, but fewer age appropriate books are required for you to earn prizes; you’ll receive the your gift certificates and entries in the grand prize drawing after every 10 books read. Elementary students are invited to join us every other week outside the library for a program specifically for them. Wednesdays at 1:00 pm on June 2nd, 16th, 30th, July 7th, and 21st, weather permitting. Children are reminded to keep a social distance of at least six feet from one another. Hear a story and check out a STEAM activity.

Teens and adults are invited to enter their name into a drawing for EVERY book they read this summer for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card.

The library will also have four different StoryWalks® throughout the summer set up in the Harlem City Park for families to read as they walk.

Our community has been very supportive, with hopes to make this summer reading a special one for children, individuals, and families. Thank you to the Aaniiih Nakoda College Library, 21st Century, City of Harlem, EZ Mart, Friends of the Harlem Public Library, Harlem Civic Association, Pete’s Plumbing, Richman Insurance, and Town Pump Charitable Foundation.
