Wildlife Museum Celebrates Scott MacKenzie Memorial Day

August 11, 2021

On July 30, the Blaine County Wildlife Museum celebrated "Scott MacKenzie Memorial Day." The celebration honored the memory of one of its founding board members by offering extended hours and free admission to any visitors on Friday.

Often called "the man with the vision and the determination to see it through," MacKenzie is considered a champion of the Blaine County Wildlife Museum. According to former manager and currently one of the museum's attendants, Tammy Edwards, MacKenzie acquired that status by remaining on the board since the museum's beginning until his death this past October.

"Scott really believed in this place and prided himself on 'doing it right' with world class exhibits. He wrote many grants over the years and was instrumental in getting the project off the ground as well as keeping forward momentum in advancing the museum," stated Edwards.

In a video about the history of the museum, MacKenzie credits Bill Harbolt-one of the museum's current directors-with approaching him by saying that something needed to be done with the old theatre building. "He was basically one of the two people who came up with the idea to put a Wildlife Museum here. The board was formed with Scott as a founding member," Edwards explained.

In late May, the Blaine County Wildlife Museum was featured in Mandy's Adventures, a video log (vlog) that Amanda Hansen maintains and posts to her YouTube channel. Through this vlog, Hansen takes people on tours of area attractions. On the episode for the Wildlife Museum, which premiered on May 27, Hansen interviewed Harbolt and then went on a tour of the museum with its current Manager, Bonnie Ortner. In this walk-through, viewers receive a glimpse at what the museum offers.

During that vlog, Harbolt speaks about both his role and that of MacKenzie in 1991 when the museum went from dream to the beginning of its current reality.

Today, a memorial plaque on display in the museum dedicates the Buffalo Jump exhibit to the memory of Stuart "Scott" MacKenzie. It claims that "without Scott's passion, the Blaine County Wildlife Museum would not exist. The Buffalo Jump was the first exhibit completed and revealed the Museum Board's vision for the facility. We remain grateful for and ever supportive of Scott's dream to feature Montana's wildlife in magnificent displays in the heart of Chinook."
