Longhorns, Hawks get by Turner in District 9C Contests

December 22, 2021

The Turner Tornado girls basketball team was the first area school to take the court this season when they played at the Class C showcase in Glasgow. After having an early season bi-week they were back on the court 13 days later. The Tornadoes traveled west to Fort Benton Friday night to take on the Longhorns and were back home Saturday playing in front of the Hometown crowd when they welcomed the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks to town.

Turner had a tough go of things early Friday night against the Longhorns. Facing a quick 9-0 deficit Coach Julie Welsh called a time out with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter to settle her team down. The team responded with better defense and a three-point bomb from freshman Cassidy Grabofsky for the Tornadoes first points of the contest. Sophomore Dakota Krass knocked down a couple from the free throw line and then drilled a straight away three from the top of the arc to cut the Longhorn lead to 15-8 with 1:26 left in the opening quarter.

Fort Benton closed out the first with a 9-0 run to lead 24-8 heading into the second quarter of action. Fort Benton’s depth and experience were just too much for the young Tornadoes as they steadily built on the lead. The Longhorns finished the half strong and took a 38-13 lead over the Tornadoes into halftime.

The Longhorns led 46-17 at the end of the third quarter and took their foot off the gas in the fourth handing the Tornadoes a 57-27 set back. Grabofsky led the Tornado Attack with 14 points while Krass finished with nine.

Saturday the Tornadoes were at home for the first time as they welcomed the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks to town.

Turner fought hard early with Grabofsky connecting from distance and scoring five first quarter points. The Hawks however took a 21-15 lead into the second quarter of action.

Chester/J-I added to the lead in the second, outscoring the Tornadoes by four in the frame to lead 33-23 at the break.

Krass and eighth grader Bridget Reed scored four apiece in the third to help Turner stay close but in the end it was the Hawks that would earn a 61-47 win. Krass totaled 13 points, Grabofsky 11 and Reed 10 on the night.

The Tornadoes concluded 2021 with games Monday and Tuesday against Dodson and Box Elder. Turner will make their first appearance of the new year on January 7 when they will travel to Hays to take on the Thunderbirds. The Tornadoes will be in Chinook the following night.
