Ice Castles Come to Nelson Reservoir

January 5, 2022

Although the recent below zero temperatures and their frigid wind chills forced the Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs and Resort at Saco, Montana, to close from December 27-29, they announced in mid-December that they had invested in four new ice castles. The facilities are part of a plan to expand recreation opportunities at Nelson Reservoir.

According to personnel at the resort, the Grey Wolf ice castles are 23 foot trailers that can comfortably sleep up to four people and have eight fishing holes. Each castle also features a restroom, pull-out sofa sleeper, a kitchen table that folds out into a bed, and a bunk bed on top. Numerous cabinets and countertop spaces enable storage for fishing poles, tackle, and other supplies. Although the kitchen is not stocked with food or utensils, it is equipped with an oven, stovetop, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink. A person will need to bring his/her own sleeping bag, grocery items, and camping gear. Finally, in case the fish aren't biting or additional entertainment is warranted, each Grey Wolf comes equipped with a Smart TV.

Included in the reservation price of each of the Grey Wolf ice castles, a Sleeping Buffalo employee will deliver the castle to the ice, set it up, and drill eight jigging holes for the ice fishing enthusiast. Anyone interested in reserving one of the trailers can call the resort's front desk at 406-527-3320 or visit their website.

For bait options, the resort also boasts "a state-of-the art minnow system" from Minnesota that will be stocked with shiners and suckers. The BaitMaster+ is a live bait system that uses a UV sterilizer to control unwanted bacteria and algae.

"Come experience your next fishing trip in comfort and style with one of our Grey Wolf Ice Castles," Hanna Watters invites. "And after a day on the lake, our hot tub and pool will be waiting for you!"
