Culinary Artists Capture Prizes

Kevin Elias auctioned off the winning breads and pies at the Seed Show on Saturday afternoon.

The culinary arts are always well represented at the Annual Montana Seed Show, and this year was no exception. On Saturday afternoon, March 12, Pie Superintendent Lisa Hamilton and Bread Superintendent Karolee Cronk reported their winners.

In the pie competition, the four adult finalists were Kellie Rasmussen in first place with her strawberry rhubarb pastry, Amanda Powell in second with her blueberry/raspberry combination, Jan Egeland taking third with classic apple, and Diane Maloney trailing with another apple variety. For her pie prowess, Rasmussen won $400.00 from her sponsors, the Rasmussens; Powell earned $300.00 donated by Columbia Grain; Egeland accepted $200.00 from Harlem Lumber; and Maloney took home $100.00 from Bank of Harlem.

Taking top honors in the cream pie category were Yvonne Rasmussen, who made a coconut cream pie and won $100.00 and first place; Ashley Schroeder, whose sour cream lemon pie pleased the judges to the tune of second place and $75.00; and Roberta Beute, who created a Big Sky Lemon Meringue that earned $50.00 in third place.


For the youth, Jacob Metcalf prepared a caramel apple pie that caught the attention of judges who ranked him first and awarded him $75.00, while Hannah Richman baked a caramel pear variety to win $50.00 in second place, and Natalie Richman made strawberry/rhubarb, earning her third place and $25.00.

Among the bread bakers, youth winners were Jessica Schroder-first place, white and Evan Schroder-second place, white. Jacob Metcalf captured first place honors in two categories: Machine White and Machine Combination. There were no youth entries for wheat or specialty breads.


In the adult competition, specialty bread winners were Anne Reed in first, Vicki Snider taking second, Jasmine Powell coming in third, and Roberta Beute capturing fourth. In the yeast breads, the top four winners in the White Bread Category were Judy Drugge, Earline Knudsen, Ashlea Schroder, and Jasmine Powell; while the wheat bread winners were Ashlea Schroder, Amanda Powell, and Carol Warburton. In the Machine White Category, Jasmine Powell won first place and Sharon Reed took second. Powell also captured first place in the Machine Combo Category.

Accepting top honors at the 72nd Annual Montana Seed Show, Anne Reed was named the Overall Bread Award Winner.

Annie Reed was named the Overall Bread Award Winner. Cronk described Reed's Cheese and Onion Bread as "quite delicious with just the right balance of flavors."
