The Ultimate Salad and Dessert Bar Returns

May 11, 2022

After COVID put the Ultimate Salad and Dessert Bar into hibernation for two years, JUMP is ready to bring that event back. The smorgasbord-style event will take place on May 15 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Wallner Hall in Chinook.

According to one of the JUMP leaders, Chrissy Downs, the Ultimate Salad and Dessert Bar is primarily a social event where friends gather for lunch to support area youth.

As the name implies, the menu offers a huge selection of both salads and desserts. Typically, the consumer will find ten or more salad-types. In addition to the full lettuce salad with various greens and multiple toppings, there are potato and pasta salads, veggie and fruit salads, as well as a few others.

At this JUMP fundraiser, desserts are as varied as the salads. The diner will find cakes, cookies, pies, and everything in between.

The proceeds from the event will not only benefit the community through JUMP’s service projects but those they assist while the group is on a mission trip. This year, JUMP members will be travelling to Northern Idaho and the Spokane area to help with needed projects in the Inland Northwest Region. Working through the Idaho Mission Project (IMP), JUMP’s mission will target the area’s homeless, elderly, and children.

Inviting volunteers to “Make an IMPact,” IMP is a service-based program with a base at Twinlow Camp and Retreat Center. Located on the shores of Lower Twin Lakes near Rathdrum in North Idaho, Twinlow is the camping and retreat ministry of the United Methodist congregations of Idaho and Washington. IMP offers a unique experience by providing a meaningful week of connection, hard work, and community building.

Although JUMP’s main purpose with the Ultimate Salad and Dessert Bar is to raise funds, organization leaders also look to the event as a way for the youth to meet and interact with the community that supports and enables them to perform their service work.

Downs explained that although the proceeds from meal sales will largely fund mission trips, the group has other expenses as well. “We feed a full meal to 30-50 people every Wednesday night, so we have grocery expenses. We also sponsor community activities—a couple of which are Vacation Bible School and the Easter Egg Hunt. We try as well to do things for the benefit of the nursing home residents. Other funds get donated towards the upkeep and utilities at Wallner Hall, which we are very thankful to have available to us.”

Open to everyone, the dinner is offered for a free will donation. “We love to have a huge crowd, and this is a perfect way to treat yourself or family to dinner at a price you can afford,” Downs stated.

In addition to Downs, other JUMP leaders—Janelle and Moses Deanon, Aaron Chriss, and Carla Anderson—will be preparing the food and assisting the youth with setting up and supervising the actual event.

Downs added: “Before the event, I take care of ordering items and advertising. Then, to be sure we have an assortment that will please the crowd, I have all the youth sign up for various salads and desserts. The parents are wonderful at helping the youth to prepare and bring the requested food.”

As a partner organization and in recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Month, the Local Advisory Council for Mental Health will have a table set up at the luncheon location with information materials pertaining to mental health and wellness.
