We've Got The County Covered
The Chinook Sugarbeeter tennis team was in Havre on Saturday May 13, hosting a Seeding Tennis Meet. The outcome of this Seeding tournament was to establish seeding and fill out brackets for the Northern B/C Divisional Tennis Tournament in Great Falls this Tuesday and Wednesday, May 16-17. Chinook Head Coach Janelle Deanon commented on the day the team faced, "The girls stuck it out for nearly a 12-hour day! It was the first time of the season that we got good enough weather to play close to divisional format with 2 full sets."
It has been a struggle all season long to get the girls on the court playing matches in tournament style competition and Deanon was happy with Saturday's weather,"Saturday really proved that our division is one of the toughest in the state as all our girls' played matches that lasted well over an hour each. They were troopers though and pulled off some great wins."
Deanon first addressed the 'Beeters No. 1 Singles player, junior Mya Berreth, "Mya sealed her position as #1 in the district beating out the others in her pool fairly easily. Sophomore Rilee Molyneaux also secured a top spot even though she fell to Sydney Hawks from CJI after a long battle. Those two have come head-to-head several times this season and I'm confident that at divisional on Tuesday Rilee will be ready to come out on top.
Sophomore Ashlyn Jensen has continued to get better every time she gets a chance to compete and Deanon commented on her play Saturday, "Ashlyn had a tough day when she started out but with a two-hour match against Hanna Nelson from CJI. Again, those two have gone back and forth all season but it was a great match to have before divisional so Ashlyn knows what will work best come playoff time." Deanon spoke confidently of her freshman Falyn Cecrle, "Our youngest, Falyn, had a great day! She took down one of the top players from Fort Benton and played hard against Fairfield but just came up a little short.
The 'Beeters turned in some solid efforts in the Doubles tournament as well, Deanon talked about her top duo, "In Doubles, Lexi Pitkannen and Torin Cecrle also sealed the deal on their number one spot, cruising through both Fairfield and Fort Benton's number one doubles teams. sophomore Jeni Mord and junior Jenna Liddle came to play, and matched up against the same number one doubles that Lexi and Torin played. Their teamwork was really spot on, and they have a good shot next week to prove they belong in the top too.
The Sugarbeeters will be joined at the Northern B/C by the Chester/Joplin-Inverness Hawks, Fairfield Eagles and Fort Benton Longhorns. The top 5 singles and doubles teams will advance to the State B/C Tennis Tournament the following week.
