Harlem Civic Association Sets Fall Festival Date

Although August 30 may sound early for a Fall Festival, that is the date the Harlem Civic Association has selected in order to book the Stonebroke String Band. The event will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Harlem City Park.

"With summer winding down and school starting, this is our kick-off to fall," stated Association President Kayla Hudon. "We appreciate the talent of the Stonebroke Band since they play such a variety of music. Because they didn't have any dates available in September, we are celebrating a bit early."

Frequent performers at regional community events and local benefits, the Stonebroke String Band is true to the string band tradition. They rely on classic acoustic rather than electric instruments. Comprised of Kelsie Harwood on guitar, Mickey Haney on mandolin and guitar, Gabe Harry on bass guitar, and Tim Whitney on banjo, guitar, and dobro, the group primarily focuses on performing bluegrass music. However, they also play old country, folk, and even a little new country.

In the world of stringed instruments, the dobro has a unique sound and is often featured in bluegrass, country, blues, and folk music. A type of resonator guitar, the dobro is celebrated for its distinctive, warm, metallic sound and slide guitar capabilities.

Hudon went on to explain that this event will feature sloppy joes provided by the Civic Association. Any salads, side dishes, and desserts will be contributed by community members in the pot-luck style.

The Association invites the community to "come out, bring a lawn chair, and join us in the park for some food and fun at our Fall Festival."
