The German POWs were housed their first year in the Chinook area in tents pictured in this October, 1944 photo taken at the fairgrounds. Tom Matsuoka, who was raising sugar beets on shares with Gus Lundeen, would pick up the prisoners from this location each morning and take the priosners to the farm west of town.
