This three foot tall wooden statue is believed to be the oldest publicly-displayed Madonna in the U.S. The exact date of when the Madonna came to the St. Francis Cathedral is not clear but it was removed to Mexico, during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, so it could be preserved when the existing church was burned. It was returned to the church, just off the Santa Fe Plaza, in 1692 and has remained there since.
