Christmas tree permits available, free to fourth-graders

December 2, 2015

Permits are available for $5 to anyone who wishes to harvest a Christmas tree on public lands under stewardship of the Bureau of Land Management. Under the “Every Kid in a Park Initiative” fourth-graders who present a valid Fourth Grade Pass will receive a free permit.

Permits are available during normal business hours at the BLM Field Offices in Glasgow, Havre, Lewistown and Malta. The Havre office, located at 3990 Highway 2 West, is open 7:45am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Call 406-262-2820 for information about the cutting permits. Christmas tree cutting permits can also be obtained at Buckhorn Store, 143 Whitcomb Street in Zortman, Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

BLM forester Bruce Reid said, “Although most folks have a favorite area to hunt for that perfect Christmas tree, there are maps available at the BLM office for those who don’t know where to go. And please remember that the Christmas tree permit does not allow for access across private lands, permission is still necessary from the landowner.”

Christmas tree cutting is an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and create a quality moment with friends and loved ones at “the most wonderful time of the year.”
