We've Got The County Covered

Bike safety workshop set for Harlem on June 16

The City of Harlem and the Harlem Public Library's Summer Reading Program are sponsoring a bike safety workshop to be held the afternoon of Thursday, June 16. The Blaine County Sheriff's Department will be conducting the workshop. Workshop organizers said there will be information and practice on several safety aspects of bicycle safety. Sheriff Glenn Huestis explained much of the material to be used was from the National Safety Council and purchased through donations of local businesses and individuals.

Youngsters are encouraged to bring their bicycles...and their safety helmets. The National Center for Disease Control found almost 800 bicyclists were killed in 2010 and there were an estimated 515,000 emergency room visits from bicycle-related injuries. Bicycle safety is a serious concern for youngsters.

During the workshop riders will learn safe riding skills, rules of riding a bicycle, proper use and fitting of a safety helmet and items to check during a bicycle safety inspection. Undersheriff Frank Billmayer said he and some of the deputies have done similar workshops at schools and for groups around the county.

The two-hour workshop is open to all kids and there is no charge. Refreshments will also be served. Meet at the west side of Harlem City Hall at 1pm. The workshop will end at 3 pm. Again, the date is Thursday, June 16.
