December 27, 2017

The Harlem Wildcats and Turner Tornadoes rolled through the first three weeks of the 2017-18 high school basketball season compiling identical 5-1 records having picked up a pair of wins this pasty week.

Turner methodically opened up a big lead Monday evening, eventually topping the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 66-37. Tuesday they concluded 2017 with a non conference 54-34 win over the Dodson Coyotes. Turner closes out 2017 with a 5-1 over all record and are 2-1 in District 9C play.

The Hays/Lodge Pole Thunderbirds played just one game this past week, falling to the North Star Knights 55-33 Thursday. Friday their game with the Big Sandy Pioneers was postponed. Hays/Lodge Pole enter the break with a 1-4 overall record, 1-2 in conference play.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters suffered a 54-13 loss Tuesday night to the Box Elder Bears and fell on Wednesday to the Chester/J-I Hawks 36-28 to finish 2017 with a 3-3 mark overall and a District 9C record of 1-3.

The Turner Tornadoes began the week with a District 9C contest against the visiting Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks and took control early. The Tornadoes picked up six points apiece from sophomore Sarah Billmayer and freshman Shyan Krass to open up a 16-10 lead.

Juniors Rylee Conlan and Raegan Conlan each knocked down a three in the second quarter as Turner opened up a 30-18 advantage after two quarters. Krass scored a trio of baskets inside the paint to push the Turner lead to 49-27 entering the fourth.

Turner closed out the contest with 17 fourth quarter points to secure a 66-37 over the Hawks. Billmayer finished with 17 markers in the win while Krass chipped in 18 on the night.

Tuesday, the girls welcomed the Dodson Coyotes for a non conference clash to end 2017. Turner jumped out to a 16-7 lead after eight minutes on the strength of seven points from junior Rylee Conlan. The defenses of both teams controlled the flow of the game with Turner outscoring the Coyotes 8-6 in the stanza for a 24-13 halftime advantage.

Conlan knocked two down from long range in the third and sophomore Sarah Billmayer would add six more down to help the Tornadoes extend their advantage 40-21 entering the fourth quarter.

Billmayer would score six more down the stretch and Turner would cruise to a 54-34 win over the Coyotes. Conlan finished with 17 points in the win including three triples and Billmayer chipped in 16 for the Tornadoes.

The Harlem Wildcats and the Rocky Boy Morning Stars played a early season classic Tuesday evening, one that needed extra time to decide a winner.

Harlem got a pair of three point buckets from junior Autumn Eagleman and sophomore L'Tia Lawrence as well as seven points from junior guard Skylee Dirden but the Morning Stars still held a 17-15 advantage heading into the second quarter of action.

Senior Mystic Striker provided the Wildcat offense with a spark before halftime scoring seven points herself in the quarter to even the contest at 30-30 heading into intermission.

Coming out to start the third quarter Harlem again benefited from the long range shooting of Dirden and Eagleman as they each hit from beyond the arc as did sophomore Taeshon Schaeffer. Harlem scored 17 third quarter points to take a 47-45 lead into the fourth quarter.

Lawrence scored seven down the stretch including another triple and Eagleman added five but the Morning Stars were able to even things up at the end of regulation sending the game to overtime all knotted at 61-61.

The extra period was controlled by Harlem with Schaeffer and Eagleman each connecting from downtown to help the Wildcats outscore the Morning Stars 12-6 in the extra session for a 73-67 non-conference win over Rocky Boy.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures in the win led by Eagleman's four triples and 18 points. Striker added 15 and Dirden and Lawrence each finished with 14 apiece.
