Chinook Lions Club sets annual Old-Timers' Dinner for April 15

April 4, 2018

Doris Hofeldt is shown at last year's Old-Timers' Dinner surrounded by several balloon sculptures. This year Chef Doug Mitchell will be cooking again and, hopefully, the balloon sculptor will be back to entertain diners. The event is Sunday, April 15 at 4pm, at the Chinook Senior Center.

The Chinook Lions Club will host its annual Old-Timers' Dinner on Sunday, April 15 at the Chinook Senior Center. The event, which started sometime in the early 1980's, is open to any self- selected old-timer who would like to attend as a guest. Long time Lion Jack Mattingly said a few years ago, "We've never tried to specifically define what constitutes an old-timer. If you think you might be an old-timer, you qualify." There is no charge.

Lions say the old-timers' dinner first began when a local teacher made a recording of reflections by Severin Sivertsen on Sivertsen's 100th birthday. Other old-timers wanted to share stories about local history and in a few years the get together for seniors became an ongoing event. For nearly 40 years the dinner has attracted from 60 to 100 guests for the gathering.

Lion President Richard Cronk said chef Doug Mitchell would be preparing the meal again this year. Last year about 90 people attended the dinner, Cronk said, "That was one of our better turnouts." Attendance is often dependent on weather and road conditions. Cory Pierson, who does balloon sculptures, walked among the guests making and giving sculptures from 'pets' to 'hats.' Organizers are hoping for another appearance by the balloon sculptor.

The Old-Timers' Dinner is one of several community projects supported by the local club. Many of its projects are aimed at youth, including financial support for the annual production by Missoula Children's Theatre, support for CHS students taking their annual school trip to D.C., presenting flags to local first graders, providing swim passes, financially supporting the Chinook swim team and other projects. The Lions Club's only fund raiser is its pronto pup stand at the Blaine County Fair each year.

Old-timers, mark your calendars to come and enjoy a good meal, entertainment and fellowship. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge. Serving will begin at 4 p.m.
