Chinook finishes 3rd at Eastern Divisional: Lions qualify 37, Harlem will send 17 to State

August 1, 2018

The Chinook Lions filled both heats in the 9-10 boys 50 Meter Freestyle Sunday. Eight of the Twelve swimmers were from Chinook with four swimmers in each of the championship heats. Pictured above is Nathaniel Plainfeather in lane one, left, Brockton Elliot in lane two and Daniel Tilleman in lane three. Tilleman won the race and Brockton finished second.

The Chinook Lions hosted the Eastern Divisional swim meet this past weekend as the 2018 Summer Swim Season winds down. The top 12 swimmers/relays in each event advanced to the state swim meet in Conrad this weekend.

A total of 383 swimmers took part in the meet, including 113 relays and 1,139 entries. The Chinook Lions had a very good weekend in the pool and will send 37 swimmers and 11 relays on to Conrad to compete in the Class AA Division. The Harlem swim team had some amazing performances as well and qualified 17 swimmers 5 relays and will compete in the Class C Division.

The Chinook Lions established some new pool records at the Eastern Divisional as well as a new Federation State record. Daniel Tilleman broke a pair of 25 year old pool records in the 9-10 boys 50 Meter and 100 Meter Freestyle events while Brockton Elliot broke a 25 year pool record in the 9-10 boys 50 Meter Butterfly.

Brockton and Daniel then teamed up with Kohen Sullivan and Nathaniel Plainfeather to establish a new Federation and Pool record in the 9-10 boy 100 Meter Freestyle Relay.

Daniel won the 50 free with a time of :33.30 and the 100 free in 1:16.28. Tilleman also finished second in the 50 Meter Breaststroke finishing in :48.37. Brocktons record time in the 50 Meter Butterfly was :38.43. Elliot also won the 100 Meter Individual Medley, touching the wall in 1:36.15 and finished second in the 50 Meter Freestyle with a time of :34.82. The pair tied for the 9-10 Midget boys High Point.

"I knew what time I had to beat and cut one second of my fastest time and got it," said Elliot when asked about his record performance in the butterfly. Tilleman said, "It's cool, I'm glad I broke the record."

When asked about the State meet Tilleman was completely focused, "I want to beat Bjorn Pederson from Lewistown in the Breaststroke, he beat me Sunday and I'm gonna work hard all week to not get beat again," said Tilleman.

Brockton is proud of everyones efforts, "I just want to do my best. I'm really happy about our time (Free Relay), we always want to win and when we break records we are all excited."

Harlem's Andrew Rasmussen remained perfect on the season by winning all three events he entered at the Eastern Divisional. Rasmussen began the weekend by winning the 200 Meter Individual Medley, completing all four disciplines in 2:41.83. Sunday he won the 100 Meter Backstroke with a time of 1:14.79. He concluded the Eastern Divisional with a win of 200 Meter Freestyle in a time of 2:20.07 to win the Intermediate Boys High Point.

Rasmussen has a clear approach to each meet, "I try to treat every meet the same, whether it's Divisional, State, doesn't matter, my goal is always to do my best every time I swim," said Rasmussen.

Nearly every week this summer and many times over the past few years Rasmussen has broken Federation or pool records, wherever they may be but that clearly is not his focus, "If I break a pool record or Fed record, great but my goal is to just get better each time I swim, to improve my time."

Andrew works hard to do just that has much higher aspirations, "I want to go to college to swim, thats what I am working for and thats what I want to do," Rasmussen concluded.

Chinook's Rachel Stephens is also perfect on the year as she again won the Eight and Under Bantam girls High Point this weekend.

Stephens has won every event she has swam this summer and looks to finish the season with strong showing at state as well.

Rachel enjoys the winning and getting the high point trophies but her favorite thing is seeing her friends from other towns.

Harlem's Lillian Cochran has won a few High Point trophies as well this summer in the Bantam Girls division and her and Stephens have become good friends.

"I like seeing my friends every week and getting ready on the heat benches," said Stephen's. Cochran echoes that feeling and adds "I try my best and swim my hardest, but I like getting to see my friends."

Stephens won the 25 Meter Freestyle in :19.21, the 50 Meter Freestyle in :41.36 and the 25 Meter Backstroke in :25.78.

Cochran finished third in the 25 Meter Freestyle, and the 25 Meter Butterfly and was second in the 50 Meter Freestyle. Both Stephens and Cochran will look to improve on their times at the State meet this weekend but they will also enjoy their time on the heat benches.

Chinook's Katie Tilleman has also earned several High Points this season against some stiff competition, "I try my best to beat my times and have fun. I really like meeting new friends and competing!"

Katie won the 9-10 girls 50 Meter Breaststroke in :46.30 and the 50 Meter Backstroke in :42.13. She finished second in the 50 Meter Freestyle touching the wall in :34.81.

The Chinook Lions 13-14 Intermediate boys 200 Meter Free Relay also established a new pool record, winning the event in 1:55.01. The team included: Erik Pula, Tyler Schoen, Reese Elliot and Benton Elliot. The quartet also won the 200 Meter Medley Relay.

The Lions also received strong performances from Bryce Elliot in the Eight and Under 50 Meter Freestyle with a winning time of :40.33. Bryce also finished second in the 25 Meter Freestyle (18.58 and the 25 Meter Breaststroke (:24.88). Kohen Sullivan won the 9-10 boys 50 Meter Backstroke with a time of :44.16.

Britton Elliot swam very well for the Lions in the 11-12 Junior Girls Division. Britton won the 50 Meter Freestyle in :32.08, the 50 Meter Backstroke in :39.52 and finished second in the 100 Meter Freestyle (1:13.25).

Britton was joined by teammates Anna Terry, Morgan Friede and Hallie Neibauer to win the Junior girls 200 Meter Freestyle Relay in a time of 2:16.97.

Lane Hassler had a very good weekend in the pool for the Lions as well winning the 11-12 Junior boys 50 Meter Freestyle with a time of :30.44. Hassler also won the 100 Meter Freestyle, completing the four lengths of the pool in 1:10.83 and also finished second in the 50 Meter Breaststroke touching the wall in :42.29.

Hassler, Jackson Nordboe, Dentin DePriest and Jacob Metcalf won the 200 Meter Freestyle Relay in 2:20.61 and the 200 Meter Medley Relay in 2:49.54

Benton Elliot has swam very well for the Lions all season and the Eastern Divisional was no exception. Benton won the 13-14

Intermediate boys 50 Meter Freestyle with a time of :27.31. He later won the 100 Meter Freestyle in 1:01.90 and finished second in the 50 Meter Butterfly.

Good luck to all of our swimmers at the Federation State Swim meet in Conrad this weekend.
